9860 Won't power up

WOW! Talk about a coincidence! I've had my Sager for about 1 year 8 months and it's giving me fits too. I emailed them this weekend to see what they think. Could you tell me what you think? Here's what happened:

I'm playing a BF 1942 and the screen goes blank, the fans stop, and I'm thinking I've had a power outage. Then reality kicks in, I realize the battery should have taken over (I was plugged in). I take a quick look and the Power Switch LED is still on, and the Battery and AC Power LED's are still on.

I cycle the Power Switch, the Power Switch Light goes on, then nothing! There's no boot sequence at all, no BIOS screen, no fans, just an occasional HD activity lamp flash. I disconnect the AC adapter and try battery power, same stuff except the AC Power LED is off too (as it should be). I cycle the battery, no change. I disconnect everything from the USB ports, no change. The CD player powers up and works using the front panel controls and will push sound out the speakers or the headphone jacks, but of course, the DVD side won't work. Personally, I think the thing's broke, hehe.

I don't know much about cracking a LAPTOP case, so I'm waiting for Sager to tell me what they think the problem might be and how much it will cost to fix it. If it's too much, I'll probably just crack the case for the heck of it and build my own desktop again, because I'm not traveling anymore and have no need for the laptop.

I must admit, during my travels this laptop has been a lifesaver! My "DESKTOP REPLACEMENT" (as I fondly refer to it) made any hotel room feel like home, and kept my hands warm at the same time.

By the way, can anyone tell me if I can transfer the hard drive info to a desktop hard drive with little to no laptop activity in case I lose the laptop?

thanks for reading

1. More than likely the mobo has bit the dust. This issue you are reporting seems to be a recurring problem with the 9860-80 series.

Sager is offering an upgrade to the newest mobo and video card. Last time I saw the rate it was in the 800-900 dollar range.....

2. To move the data from your dying Sager you will need an adapter cable that will allow you to connect you SATA laptop drive to a SATA port on a desktop pc. Local computer shows, EBAY, local PC dealers or the large PC stores should have this item. Please check your documentation that came with your Sager purchace to confirm the drive inside IS a SATA drive.

I have a 9860 and it has 2 Segate 100gig IDE drives...so check first before you buy that adapter.

The laptop drive can be removed with little problems, just go easy on the screws that hold the drive to the cage and the ribbon cable that hooks the drive to the mobo.

Good Luck

Mine occasionally does the same thing. As soon as you hit the power button, it comes on blue and the HD led comes on dimly for a few seconds and then everything shuts down right? Agreed, mobo is probably going. After it happens, I have to disconnect my power supply from my laptop and the wall outlet, close the laptop, let everything cool for about 30 min, then plug the power adaptor in the the outlet and then the laptop. Then I cycle the power about a half dozen times and repeat the process until it comes on. Usually once it comes on, it's good for a few more weeks until it happens again... eventually I expect it will die completely and then it should be easy to get fixed (2nd mobo for me I suspect).

As for your HD, what you would need to do depends on what type of controller (IDE or SATA) your desktop and laptop use. If they use the same type of controller, you can simply remove the HD from the laptop and install it as a 2nd HD in your desktop. If the drives are of differing type, then you might want to buy an external 2.5" USB2.0 enclosure that converts either IDE or SATA (depending on what type of laptop drive you have) to USB2.0 and hook up through USB. External enclosures (cables included) are <$20 and you may want to go this route regardless depending on what you want to do with your laptop and HD.
