I'm personally a fan of Western Digital or Seagate. Also, when browsing for a hd I never look for anything slower than 7200rpm. That's just my personal preference, if you don't mind the wait you can check out the 5400rpm hd's.

I just got myself a 250gig external hard drive from Fry's, a the Acomdata external went for only around $60 with the rebate. Very cheap.

The speed (7200 RPM vs. 5400 RPM) will make no difference with an external drive and the transfer speed will be limited by the USB (or Firewire) bus...

Get a 3.5" 7200rpm drive and an enclosure (with support of things you want like sata/ide, usb/fw/esata etc) and make it yourself. Its much better, cheaper and expandable than an external hd.

Try this thread, has allot of info on external hard drives:

PS: The Aprcorn units are very nice, EZ-BUS-DTC having a 75mm fan.

One of the most important things is the CHIPSET, and the cooling of the HD. You don't want a case that encloses a hd that has no airflow, has no direct path to the external housing.

BTW: Apricron sells "complete" units with the hd already installed... the above is a "kit" you stick your own hd in. (2 minute job-5year old could do it) www.apricorn.com

Because Apricron sells complete units they have experiance SUPPORTING the END user.... Unlike allot of companies that just make/sell the enclosure and haven't a clue when a "issue" arises.

Addtionally the EZ-BUS-DTC /DT /DTS comes with a OEM copy of Arconis True Image.

As a video editor, I rely exremely on external hard drivers. And for years now, LaCie hard drives have been the best the job. I know a lot of video editors out there will back me up. Nothing comes close in terms of reliability and performance. You will pay more than the competition, but the price is small for protecting all your life's work. I have owned Maxtor and Seagate external hard drives and have lost years of works with each. I now own 2 500GB LaCie d2 Big Disk Extremes for over 3 years now without any problems of any kind.
