problems with firefox

Hello, if I have about a dozen tabs open in firefox a lot of time it will become non responsive. The only way I can get it working right again is to shut down windows xp home and restart. Im running a basic notebook that has 512mb ram and integrated graphics.

there is a few thing u can do to kinda help it a little bit, but opening many tabs in firefox (or even in IE7) would definitively bog down your system

from address line, type in about:config
modify or create the followings:
. browser.cache.check_doc_frequency = integer = 3
. browser.cache.disk.enable = boolean = true
. browser.cache.memory.capacity = integer = 16384 (or even 1/4 of it)
. browser.cache.disk_cache_ssl = boolean = true

adding more ram would definitively helps since u have integrated gpu
the latest ff version is quite good
u can just kill ff via task manager instead of shutting down XP (might wait a bit for the process to be really killed by XP)

cheers ...

thanks ghn...i also updated to the latest version changed ssl to true (strange that it would be set to false). Also the browser.cache.memory.capacity setting...nothing was found.

firefox still not acting "the way I think it should"...the bottom line is the more tabs I keep open and the longer I keep it open the more it crashes.

davioh2001, it might be spyware/adware/malware (i.e. based on you saying Firefox crashing)... or it would appear you may be experiencing the memory leakage problem that has been plaguing Firefox for a while (but it will not crash Firefox like you described). Anyhow, the ssl setting is for saving encrypted traffic on your hard drive, thus it would be a good idea to set that to false. The browser.cache.memory.capacity setting has to be added manually if it isn't there already. If you haven't upgraded to the newest version I suggest you do. Also if you have a lot of extensions/plugins enabled it will consume quite a bit of memory. If you are using another windows manager like WindowBlinds, Firefox will suck up some serious memory (if using WindowBlinds, add Firefox to the exclusion list). Anyhow, cut down on the number of extensions/plugins and use the Session Manager extension when you have to restart Firefox when it starts acting up.

Here's a link for your Firefox memory usage FAQ: http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/memusage.html

I use several spy ware cleaners...also it doesn't crash as much as it just "stops responding" and then when I ctrl alt del it doesn't seem to want to shut down right away .

i saw this with ff beta 2, working with more tabs would cause firefox to hang, i had to revert it back to 1.5.0.7 - well not just revert, but really clean it up and re.intall ff from scratch - a pain. but more & more i realized that this has something to do with windows than anything else. ff is 100% stable under my linux partition

i followed the recommendations from mozilla and can feel the better performance

as pompeiidang mentioned, if the entry is not there, u must create it
about:config is the best way i know how

cheers ...
