Thread Starter
Hey guys. I'm looking to custom build a desktop. This is for gaming, so i am looking for the best stuff around. Could you help me with a list of anything from towers to wireless cards? Remember, this is purely for gaming, so i am looking for the best stuff for that. Oh, and post what you can, but keep in mind my price range is from about $4500 and under.

Thanks,

-Mac

Is this off of iBuypower.com?

If you're in the US then newegg.com is the best place to go.

If you want an Intel Rig, I'd say get this processor and motherboard. (Dont forget the processor cooler)

If you want an AMD rig, go for this processor and motherboard. (Dont forget a good processor cooler)

This Corsair Brand memory is a pretty good buy.

This hard drive should be more than enough. If you want more performance you might want to consider a RAID0 Array or picking up one of the 10K RPM drives in place of this.

For graphics card, I'd say either this or this if you want a Nvidia build. Maybe put whichever one you get in SLI mode? (if you want an ATI build I'll get to that in a moment)

This is the best priced DVD burner Newegg has.

A case is dificult. Since each has its own apperance, you might not like what I like. This one has a lot of nice features. So does this one. But I'd say browse cases on your own till you find what you like.

Finally, heres the Power Supply

If you'd rather have an ATI video card machine use these parts instead:

For the AMD machine use this motherboard instead.

For the Intel machine use this motherboard.

And finally for the ATI video cards, go for either this or [url="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102045"]this[./URL]

This is where the choice comes in. I was just browsing iBuypower, and their stuff is great (for about $4800 though). Dual graphics cards, dual 10k HD's, Dual AMD Processors, etc. If I buy from newegg, can i get the same equipment (even for a lower price?)?

Do NOT buy amd, conroe is TONS better, test have proven it. Also why do you need dual 10k drives? It's a gaming system, you barely need 120gb. And yes building your own comp is much cheaper than buying one. But when you buy one you get a warranty, and somebody to call when your rig breaks down.

AMD isnt as crappy as Kunckles post would have you believe. Performance gain to Intel is 20% about. Becides, processors have become so powerful that you'll never use the full potential of a lot of the high end chips from both compaines.

Yes, Intels processors are better for now, but this is intels newest line, AMD hasnt released their new architecture yet (A DDR2 controler doesnt mean new architecture), so Intel is just king by default. We'll see what happens when AMD's new chips come out. Maybe Intel will still be king, maybe AMD will again become king.

Not to bash Intel, their new Core2 chips are great. I just didnt think that was totally fair to AMD.

Onto hard disks: Size for a disk is another preference thing. And as for RPM's, some people hate load times and a 10K Raptor would be their cup of tea. The HDD is currently the slowest part of any computer. Thats where your bottlenecks will always be. Personally, on my gaming machines, I can fill up 120GB easily with the size of some of these games. And in my job, I can fill up a 320GB drive in no time Hooray graphic design!

Each part you get through Newegg is warranted. If something breaks you just go to the company that made it. Computer repair isnt hard.

For $4500, I'll build you a killer rig and have enough to take a trip to Europe.

Antec P180B case $149
Antec NeoHE 550W $100
Intel E6600 $320 (the E6800 is a waste of money)
ASUS P5W-DH Crossfire mobo $260
Zalman CNPS 9500 cpu cooler $60
2GB Corsair XMS2 PC8500 DDR2 1066 $450
2x Raptor 150GB in RAID 0 $460
or 2x Seagate 320GB 7200.10 in RAID 0 $190
Pioneer DVR-111 $40
ATI X1950XTX Crossfire $850
2 x Zalman VF-900 GPU cooler $100

Total $2530 to $2800

Optional purchase:

Logitech G15 keyboard and G7 mouse $80 (after rebate from buy.com)
Logitech Z5450 or Z5500 5.1 speakers $250
Dell 30" LCD at 2560x1600 $1800

Nice riz wiz. I just made you a 4500 dollar rig because you asked, but that kind of money on a comp is overkill.

Depending if you have to pay sales tax and shipping. I usually don't find the best price at Newegg since I'm in California and have to pay sales tax.
Sorry, Wiz I'm all the way over in Maryland so no sales tax on newegg here. It often slips my mind.

See, now what if i wanted to go with dual cpu's / graphics cards? Would that be just stupid? From what I hear, those are almost necessary for a good gaming pc.
