Sager 5760 Core 2 Duo upgrade (with pics)

The FedEx guy rang the doorbell about an hour ago. My brand spankin' new Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processor came today! I wanted to upgrade the processor in my 2 month old Sager 5760 from a 2.0 GHz Core Duo (T2500) to the same speed Core 2 Duo (T7200). I'm currently running Vista RC1 x86. My ultimate goal is to run the 64 bit version of the same.

The source of most of my information on "how to" came from this article.

Below is my brief description of how to do it yourself.

Before you begin, UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER and REMOVE THE BATTERY. Next find a surface with plenty of room and place down a soft cloth/towel. Turn the notebook over and remove the 12 screws that hold on the main cover. It should now look something like this:

Next remove the 4 screw that attach the processor heat pipe (near the left/rear of the computer). Remove them in the order shown on the heat pipe. Carefully lift off the heat pipe and place it aside.

Using a straight screwdriver, turn the screw that locks the processor in place. It should lift out easilly. If if does NOT, you have not turned the screw enough to unlock the pins. Place it aside as well.

The new Core 2 Duo processor should drop right in. Note the pin placment. The little triangle should be pointing north west (i.e. it will be in the upper left hand corner). Gently turn the locking screw.

Apply a thin layer of thermal grease to the surface of the Core 2 Duo procesor and replace the heat pipe. Be sure to follow the directions as to the order of the the four heat pipe screws. Finally replace the main cover with the 12 screws.

If all went to plan (and with a little luck) when you replace the battery, plug in the power and turn on the computer, you will see the old "Core Duo" logo repalced with a generic "Intel" logo.

Here are before and after screen shots showing the Sager 5760 running the CPU-Z application on Windows Vista (with Sidebar gadgets running on the right hand side).

Very nice!
Thanks for the guide and pictures, I'm sure they'll prove useful to a lot of people having some thoughts on upgrading their 5760's themselves.

cool how much was Intel Core 2 Duo

Excellent guide dude. Doesnt that void the warranty?
i Would think it would

Actually don't believe it does (at least, not with Sager).

Sager 5760 Core 2 Duo upgrade (with pics)

Nice Donavon
But will it work with a Dual Core 2 duo T7600 (2.33GHz) w/4M L2 On-die cache - 667MHz FSB ? will the motherboard handle such a chip?

And will Sager ever come out with a real "Desktop" Dual or Quad Core chip for a laptop like in the good old days? (Real desktop chips on notebooks)
PS can you upgrade almost new notebook cpu to core 2 duo i.e any other notebook like HP, Dell or what about the new quad duo
And Sager notebook upgrade to AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200. Because I would like to pay for an upgrade then spend $3000.-$4000 which seems Dumb and the same thing as well with video card Thanks

What do you mean by Desktop processors? Sager is, and has always been, a laptop company. Last time Sager put a desktop processor into a laptop, it brings memories of the Live From Japan thread.

BTW,

I have since upgradged my Vista to the x64 version of RC2. It's running very stable. My only big complaint is that I can't seem to find a 64 bit driver for the Elantech touchpad so my palms are always "clicking" the touchpad as I type and without the proper driver I can't disable tapping. It's gotten so bad that I disable the touchpad while working at my desk (by pressing Fn-F1) and use a Apple bluetooth Mighty Mouse.

Also, anybody know where I can find a 64 bit camera driver (and the 64 bit touchpad driver)?

As far as the warranty questions go, I did this because I could. I was only concerned with the technical outcome, not the warranty issues. Plus, I still have the old processor. If I have issues, I'll just drop that in before I return the machine for warranty related problems.

Nothing like a nice train wreck in progress.

(and check my sig if you don't know what he meant by the "Live from Japan thread")

This applies to any case with a m70u clevo case or whatever the model number is. I'm too lazy to flip up my notebook.
Anyhow. I know that Sager uses it, Hypersonic does, and so does Voodoo. I'm sure there are one or 2 more companies that use the same clevo case.
