HP Compaq nx6325

post #1 of 12

This looks like a pretty good deal. What do you all think of this for basic use with occaisional light gaming (WoW). I'd recommend an addition more memory personally.

I wonder how easy it is to upgrade the processor to a turion.

according to hp site, this system can support:
"min: Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3200+ (1.6-GHz, 512-KB L2 cache)
max: AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Mobile Processor TL-60 (2.0-GHz, 2 x 512-KB L2 cache)"

http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en...3-1849082.html

so it is probably just an issue of getting to the cpu area and swap it
hmmm, impressive - too bad it does not support upgradability for the graphic card as well-

cheers ...

A couple of thoughts:

1: This unit looks pretty sweet for the money ($600- $640)... but has anyone seen anything like the above (business class HP machine) in the W I D E S C R E E N format?

I ask the above, because I'm looking for a laptop to tide me over for a while that's not a alot of $$$$... This model looks interesting.... (Although I'm really looking for something in the widescreen format... and has to have a DVD burner, Dual layer...)

Picked up a Acer 4062WLMi (LX.TAK05.301) the other day from SamsClub for $571.71
Intel Pentium M Processor 740 (2MB L2 cache, 1.73GHz, 533MHz FSB);
512MB (256/256) DDR2 533 SDRAM;
80GB hard drive;
integrated Dual DVD drive (DVD+/-RW);
15.4" WXGA (1280 x 800) TFT display; Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900;
802.11b/g WLAN, 10/100 LAN, V.92 modem.

While the above is "ok", battery life is only around 2 hours with stock battery (2000mh), there is a 4000mh battery...

GPU is VERY weak, bought the unit while getting "milk, bread".. since it was on markdown, didn't have time to research the specs on the unit... So I am interested in a model like linked to above.

Would prefer a unit with a better GPU... one that has better battery life... Was impressed with the screen on the ACER.

Think the business line of HP's have a magnesium alloy case/re-inforcement... ACER case of course being plastic, and has allot of flex to it..

If ANYONE knows of any "deals" out there, please speak up... While "new" is prefered, Refurb is ok...

Little edit to the above... See other vendors listing the above for around $600..

Anyone know of a model simular to the above, except in W I D E S C R E E N ? Seen any deals on say a re-furb business model?

In case anyone's interested below are the GPU specs of a HP Compaq nx6325 with the new Turion 64 X2 chip under the hood. (Above unit having the AMD Mobile Sempron 3400+.... I'm wondering were the AMD Mobile Sempron 3400+ places on CPU performance /battery life?)

http://laptopmag.com/Review/HP-Compaq-nx6325.htm

Unfortunately, the nx6325 delivered a below-average MobileMark 2005 score of 174. That trails the Intel Core Duo-powered business notebooks we’ve tested this year, which generally score in the low- to mid-200 range

The ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 graphics engine managed a score of 1,380 on 3DMark03, which is on a par with other business notebooks.

Just for reference the 15.4 Widesreen Acer 4062WLMi (LX.TAK05.301) the other day from SamsClub for $571.71 with the lowly Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 getting around 1080

Really impressive notebook. Over 4 hours batterylife is impressing considering its an AMD and the battery aint the biggest either. Here is another good review: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1982989,00.asp Tobad it only has 512 ram and the gfx steals 128 on top of that, if you put in another 1024 ram it sure would be much better probably getting a more normal mobilemark-score.

HP Compaq nx6325
AMD Mobile Sempron 3400+
ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 with up to 128-MB shared system memory

On that review, Great link and all, had some good info, but that review is not for the AMD Mobile Sempron 3400+ cpu'd machine @ $500-$630.... It's for the much more expensive model running $1,186- $1,286. For that kind of money I'd probably go with something else.

I'm still left wondering just how the AMD Mobile Sempron 3400+ cpu'd unit would compare to other recent cpu's. In other words, why so cheap, what's wrong with it. just how "bad" a AMD Mobile Sempron 3400+ cp'd unit would be...

Haven't found much info on the AMD Mobile Sempron 3400+ ... a chart or something that lists cpu's over the last few years..

In Norway where I live the tested modell costs 730 USD so its actually really cheap A friend of mine just ordered one.

The cheap price is due to the fact that Sempron has a limited L2 cache (128-256 KB depends on the model), that greatly reduce's the price since cache memory is very expensive (since more transistors are required on-die). The Sempron 3400+ has a die size of 84mm2, produced on AMD's 90-nanometer silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process. Sempron is somehow similar to Intel's Celeron D processor, but outperforms it in every way, especially in games, also it provides 64-bit and SSE3 support. But falls behind when compared to Athlon 64 3400+ in every single test.

Andreas.CY,

Have you run across info on doing a CPU swap on this model? Ended up buying one...

Keene
90nm, Socket S1, Rev. F, 2 x 512KB L2, DDR2 667, EVP, DMX, AMD-v, 25W TDP
3400+(1.8GHz/256KB L2

Mobile Sempron "Keene" (Socket S1, 90 nm, Low power)

Model = Mobile Sempron 3400+
Freq = 1800 MHz
L2 cache =256 KiB
Hyper Transport= 800 MHz
Multiplier = 9x
Voltage=0.950v - 1.125v
TDP=25 W
Release date=May 17, 2006
Order part number(s) =SMS3400HAX3CM

Looks to me it's 1/2 of one of the new AMD duo core x64? cpu's , those having a TDP of 33 which is pretty close...

HP Compaq nx6325 Notebook AMD Mobile Sempron 3400+ 1.8GHz, 256KB L2, 512MB 667MHz DDR2 (1 dimm installed, 2 slots- System max 4 gig), 60GB 5400rpm SATA, DVD±RW DL, 15" XGA, Fingerprint Sensor, 7-in-1 media reader, 802.11b/g, Win XP Home - RB526UT#ABA

$500, and got the rebate very fast....

PS: If anyones looking for info on this model there some in this thread: http://www.notebookforums.com/thread176205.html

Hi WeAreNotAlone

I didnt found any releated info on swapping the CPU on the particular model, but mostly swapping a CPU in a laptop takes only a few minutes (unlike MXM gfx cards ) , considering the compatibility issues and TDP are resolved.

In your socket you could fit any of the following AMD Turion X2 processors ranging from Turion 64 X2 TL-50 - Turion 64 X2 TL-60. TL- 52-60 models have double the L2 cache of the TL-50 and TDP are somehow near 30-35 (differs by model) . With artic silver thermal paste or a better one you could narrow the gap from your Sempron TDP, in any case i dont think you will face any overheating problem, if any you could try undervolting the Turion which comes at 1.10 V.

Last thing you want to check is for a new bios update if needed.

Thanks for the info... haven't keep up on the various AMD cpu offerings out there... Will do a cpu upgrade at some point weighing the cost /benfit ratio...

And I'm still waiting for my model to appear on HP Partsurfer http://www.partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main so I can compare /verify the same motherboard, and heat sink /heat pipe is used.

I'm thinking they use the same (more cost effective, less parts to stock)

model most like it being the RB544UT...

E-mailed HP again today to bug them about getting it listed...
