if u look at the different (short) guides as how to remove/replace components - u would be able to take the whole laptop apart

thanks for the link.
I'll try removing the keyboard tonight to see if it will give me any clue on how to separate the silver plastic with the black plastic.

one is on top of the other, so u just might have to pry one up first, usually the power strip

GHN,

thanks again. After I took the keyboard out everything else (or almost) was self intuitive. I got my power jack fixed (added jumper wire for the center hot pin).

ghn,

shoot, I should've taken a picture when I had it out.
I had to assemble and disassemble it like 4-5 times. All I've done is soldered 18 Ga wire to the center pin on the back of connector and to the mother board on the opposite side. Likely there is enough space inside the laptop to do that. The trick is to use some electric tape, otherwise you might short out the power supply because of copper tape attached to the chassis (I had it happened to me). Anyway it's a very easy fix. I will take pictures if someone really needs to see them.

Here is the picture of what I've done. The other side of the jumper is soldered to the center pin on the other side of the mother board.

I had the same power issue, and from the looks of past posts on the forum, others have as well. I really appreciate this post as it helped me solve my problem without spending a lot of money or just scrapping my laptop (this did cross my mind). The hardest part was disassembling to access the power connection, but with the help of this post, I did it. The connection on the back of the jack was broken and not connected to the jack. I had a friend who is experienced in soldering solder it for me in about 5 minutes, and now my laptop is operating normally. Thanks for the post.

I need to replace my power connector. I had a friend borrow it and broke off the male cononector inside the power connector. The friend dug around to try and remove the nipple. Holy crap. Now I need to replace the power connector on my computer. Is that possible?
The friend of mine who did the soldering for me said that it can easily be replaced. He was able to fix mine by just soldering the connection because the jack was OK, but he did say if that didn't fix my problem permanently, he could replace it pretty easily. As a matter of fact, mine is starting to act up again like the connection is getting loose again. We may have to replace it as you are. Good luck! The hardest part to me was disassembling the thing to get to it. I don't look forward to doing it again.

Another repair with pics

OK, my first fix didn't last, so I had to go back in. This time I followed the original author of this post's way of fixing it. On my first fix, I tried just soldering the broken jack, but this time I added the wire as he did. It seems to be OK for now, but we'll see. Here is my first try at posting pictures on the forum. It's a not so good view of my latest fix, front and back of the motherboard.

I am having the same issue with my m460 (identical) with the power jack not working properly. I have attempted to remove the black bottom to get to it but I can't seem to get the bottom off. All of the components have been removed (CD, HDD, CPU/RAM cover, miniPCI covers, battery...am I missing anything?). I guess it's not as intuitive as I was hoping it would be. Does anyone have an idea what to do next after removing the components, covers, and screws? Any help is greatly appreciated...

take a peek around the cardbus slot. sometimes screws hide underneath it

search the forum also for power jack in general, many gateway/emachines model share the same casing

There are other screws holding it together from the top under the keyboard. You'll have to remove the keyboard to get to them. One of the screws that you removed from the back was the keyboard screw (marked with a K). You should now be able to lift the keyboard off and expose the other screws. Be careful removing the keyboard cable, as I broke the plastic piece that holds mine in place. I was able to make it work again, but barely.

Aha! The screws under the keyboard did the trick. I took the lappy apart and fixed my problem! Apparently the solder on the other side of the DC jack wasn't making a proper connection...so a little solder fixed the DC jack issue... Thanks for the help!

I found only 3 screws under the keyboard. I have this M360 almost completely disassembled but there is still some thing holding me from detaching the black plastic bottom plate. Once this is done I can access the power in jack. Help!!!
