I use the backpack that came with my XPS Gen 1 for my M 1710 and it is awsom and still in mint condition. Even tho the XPS Gen 1 was a 15 inch my M 1710 fits snug I mean a perfect fit. I don't know what kind it is but it is quality made. If the new backpacks are anything like the one that came with the XPS Gen 1 they are great backpacks. Maybe someone else can chime in who has one of the new ones.

There's something wrong with your M1710, then. I get nearly 3 hours out of mine under light use.

Sol, what does SMART monitor do? Also, how do you have monitoring disabled when in BATT mode? Is it a manual process? Finally, have anyone tried undervolting their computer on BATT power and seeing how that helps?

Well, I had a Dell standard Swiss Gear Pegasus backpack.

It is very solid made and I agree. But it looks quite "average".

Also I seen many students using these standard backpacks which means thieves know they have a higher chance in getting a laptop inside these Dell standard backpacks.

I currently have a Pakuma Akara K1 backpack. It fits my E1705 perfectly and nobody thought it's a laptop backpack at beginning

It depends on how badly you need the uber graphics and 3 digit frame rates. My D820 plays BF2 at 1280x1024 just fine (I don't want to have any of the picture chopped off or stretched) with settings on medium and with no anti-aliasing. It doesn't look NEARLY as good as it does on my Core 2 Desktop though, but is quite LANable. (kinda wished I'd checked my D820 in at QuakeCon instead of my desktop) Quake 4 is quite playable with the proper settings. The only game my D820 really has a problem with is Company of Heroes which is just punshing to graphics cards in general. Even then I can still crank down the graphics enough to play it, however, the game loses its charm when the details are all turned down.

I use my XPS gen 2 on campus, and from my experience it will get the job done, but it gets to be a hassle packing it up every day for class. Tip 1 – sit near power outlets, I always come to class a little early to get a chair next to one. Tip 2, in addition to the m1710, look into getting a Palm TX + “Think Outside” BT keyboard = uber portability, comes with Docs to go which edits native MS word , Excel and Power Point files; Wi-Fi, Email on the go; add a $30 2 gig SD card, and you have a mobile media player (free “TCMP” media player can run divx movies nearly flawlessly). Last year I used my XPS to take all my notes on, now I only bring it to class when I know I will be typing more than usual, or need to use it for a presentation.

Palm tx from circuitcity.com is $269, go to couponmountain.com and you can get 10% off that, and pick it up that day from your local store

Hi
I have a xps m1710 and i find it easy to carry around. I also use it to surf and do general documents using the battery and it lasts just over 2 hours with all the lights on so on low power i would think in should last 3 hours.

Also take a look at the slappa web site for a backpack

I'm in -Empty-'s boat. Palm Tx with a foldable keyboard = best mobility EVER!!!

I plan on getting a Palm Tx during Christmas for my agenda and quick document work at work and university. I'll still carry both everywhere though I just won't have to pull out the laptop and wait for it to boot to make a quick note, or a change in my outlook calendar or contacts, not even for a quick e-mail scan since I got a BT celphone with a phone-as-modem plan.

Palm's are GREAT tools for all the above mentioned tasks and the Tx is the perfect device in its category. I had a LifeDrive but it got stolen and even though it KICKED ASS the micro drive it used made it god awfully slow for a Palm device.
