Painting an Acer TravelMate 8104

When I bought my Acer TravelMate 8104 one year ago, I got cheap and I have not bought a protective carrying case for it. I thought that my book bag was enough to protect it. Now, it will cost more since I have to renovate and by the case.

One year later, the laptop is scratched to hell all over the place. The scrolling button has paint chipped. The wrist rest area is darkened. The rubber feet are gone.

The laptop is still very good in terms of performance. I do want to replace it just because it looks horrible. I want to give it a facelift. I want to paint it.

Can someone please upload the 8104 service manual?
Can someone tell me where I can buy or make new rubber feet?

First, I thought that I should paint the gray areas white while the display and the keyboard remain black -- like the Samsung notebooks. They look good, but it still has the same overall design -- two colours. Then I thought that I should try the white MacBook-style. However, I moved away from that because the wrist areas will darken again. I think that I'm going to paint it black, but I don't want it to look like the generic IBM Thinkpad. Those are quite ugly.

I know that having the glossy, mirror look requires hard work. The problem I have is that this is my primary computer. I cannot keep it disassembled for a month, which some tutorials I read suggested.

I heard about Krylon Fusion Plastic. I saw one painted laptop with red Krylon. However, it didn't have the glossy look (I don't know if he used the gloss paint or the non-gloss). It gave the impression of cheap plastic, not metallic.

Have any of you used Krylon Fusion Plastic with great success? Supposedly, it bonds with plastic. Meaning, it doesn’t' chip away and scratch easily. Also, it doesn't require a primer.

I've also heard about Vinyl Dye. I don't know anything about it.

I've only seen two good tutorials on painting, but those used automotive paint, which requires a lot of time. I don't necessarily want it to have the super mirror look because every single fingerprint will be seen.

Thank you,

SpookyET

PS: I've searched for "painting" in this forum. I've read the threads. Most have 404 links.

If you dont wanna use Automotive paint just get yourself some spray cans, masking tape, cutting board and some time.

Tape off the sections that doesnt need the paint and make sure its thight.

Spray away.

Wait.

You're done.

If you have even more time You can try too sand the plastic a bit too give it a little feel of a rough edge so teh paint will work better then just being painted on the surface.

I don't want to use masking tape. I want to disassemble it. That's why I have asked for the service manual.
I just saw that Krylon also make a "hammered paint" which has a pattern.

I'm not sure which black to use. I couldn't find high resolution screenshots of the following:
Krylon Fusion for Plastic - Flat Black
Krylon Fusion for Plastic - Gloss Black

For the clear coat, I think I'll use:
Krylon Triple-Thick Crystal Clear Glaze

I don't know what degreaser I should use and whether I should remove the current paint and what paint remover I should use.

Also, I don't know if it's necessary to hide the ACER logo on the back, and if it is, what kind of filler compound I should use?

For rubber feet, start at Home Depot, Lowes, and local hardware stores. There are a variety available in different shapes, sizes, colors, and attachment options.

They usually can be found in the hardware aisle. Look everywhere to come up with the most suitable ones. Depending on what you are replacing, you may need to modify some.

You probably don't need to remove paint, just sand carefully with 400 grit quality sandpaper, being careful not to let grit or paint dust in any crevaces.

Compressed air and or a toothbrush can help too.

Ok a third reply.

I love Krylon for most things, but you may want to consider checking out hobby paint. It usually has much finer paint molecules, allowing a thinner coat. That way it won't look so much like a thick coat of spray paint, and edges and details will be crisper. Check your local hobby store, it is more expensive, but higher quality. (hobby paint is made for plastic, too)

Krylon doesn't require sanding. Sanding is useful for the clear coat to get the mirror finish.

I wonder if anyone was able to get a nice paint job that doesn't chip and scratch with automotive paint from spray.

You're not going to get a nice paint job with automotive paint in a spray can.

Use an airbrush and hobby paint. Expect to spend several days on this project applying multiple coats of paint.

Basically, you'll get out of it what you put in.

automotive paint from can looks like ass on a laptop, hard to control the runs and it goes on pretty thick and spotty.

Get an airbrush and a small hobby compressor. Very thin coats, multiple times. No need to sand until the very last layer.

I've decided to use Krylon because this laptop is my primary computer, and I can't keep it disassembled for that long.

UPDATE:
I feel like I'm in a communist country, where the shelves are empty, and one has to go from shop to shop to find what he needs.

I have bought one can of Krylon Fusion for Plastic Black Gloss and one can of Krylon Triple Thick Clear Glaze.
Only one Wal-Mart Super Centre out of many had them.

I could not find a degreaser, but I think dishwashing soap should be good enough.
I could not find 400 Grit and 2000 Grit sandpaper. Wal-Mart does not have it. Home Depot does not have it. Ace Hardware (full of rednecks) does not have it.

Since Krylon does not require sanding, I should be able to paint it and give it at least one layer of clear coat. Sanding is only required if one wants to get rid of the orange peel and have a mirror finish: sanding the clear coat layers until the desired mirror effect is achieved.

I should be able to start painting tomorrow. I'm still looking for the TravelMate 8104 service manual.

The inside of a laptop are much more complicated than a desktop. A desktop is simple and easy to poke and disassemble. While I got scared, I'm not a coward, and I like to take risks. I have diassembled it. Putting back together the puzzle will be quite interesting. It is very complicated.

My main problem right now is painting. I can't paint outside because the wind blows a lot of crap on the case. It just doesn't work. I can't paint in the garage with the door open because of the wind.

It's too risky to paint with no ventilation.

I'd appreciate some tips.

First off I would paint in layers. Taking your time, and with plenty of due care, you could make that laptop look like an old stack of anal fisting magazines.

Why you may ask? Simple .... That way, when you're not at home and don't feel like carying around a finger painted fagbook you can stick it in your dad's closet and it would totally blend in. No one would ever find it in the event of a burglary, home invasion, et cetera.

I was asking for tips on how to fix the wind and debree problem, not that.

Well, you can wait for a calmer day, or you have to paint in a room with no dust and an exhaust fan.

Your other choice would be to paint and sand some more times.
