Looking For Laptop

Hello.
IVe asked this question before, but am opening up to more ideas.
Ill be posting this on various forums to get overall responses as i need to make a desicion and want the best for me.

Im am looking for a laptop thats 7lbs (not really more than that at all), has dedicated video 64mb at a minimum, duo core cpu centrino technology.
Screensize is not really an extremely big issue, but battery life is most certainly is (more than 2hrs is a huge plus here).

Im old school sager12lb notebook guy so ive seen these forums in their infancy and alas, even tho i thought my tastes would never change, they have (yes, a 10-12 lb notebook will kick your ass since ive had it since early 2k3).

The cpu will be the fastest one possible thats available.

My two big things are a dedicated mobile video module and lightweght mobility and batterylife in a nutshell.

Thanks Guys!

Well, since battery life is a big issue for you, I would look mostly into the 12 inchers. Dell and Alienware have some nice offerings. Also, maybe the 14" market as well. I wasn't big on the battery life with mine, as I will probably use it plugged in most of the time, but that should get you started.

12 inchers eh? Not bad..even the 14s.

But what about the video card. Id really like a dedicated one which is 64mb at a min, i just cant stand integrated video and i need good batterylife.

you know that the intergated gpus are better then the old 64mb dedicated gpu right? the best you can get is a 7400 in a 12inch.

Dell and Alien? No.

Sony's new UP is pretty much have it down right now with there UP system. But if you wanna step it up a notch you might wanna just get something thats around a 14.1inch or 15-15.4inch screen.

Anything in the 14-15-15.4-17inch notebooks will weigh around 8lbs or less. Give or take a bit more. Anyways the new sony is around 12inch I think and is around 3lbs or less.

Really?

Got any links to machines that do so?

I was actually looking at the Dell m1210s
post #7 of 17
the m1210 is actually made by Asus, so build quality should be good. might also want to consider the Sony SZ, a 13" with a 7400 and an integrated GPU for switching back and forth to save battery life.

both would be ~$2k though depending on the configuration. both also come with Core 2 Duo.

there's also my personal fav, the Asus A8Jm (see sig).

dell m1210 is a popular 12inch but imo the extended battery is pretty ugly. 14inch there more models to choose from like w3j which coems with a x1600.

hmmm..im looking intently on the dell, in fact..how does the nvidia in that dell compare to the ati radeon 9600pro (128mb) mobile? (in my old sager).

Does it out do it?

Painful honesty please!

By the way, whats the weight and batterylife on that asus?

Well, if you'e looking at the Sony SZ series, I'd recommend the Asus W7J. Cheaper with higher specs and it looks nicer too.

Just a personal opinion: for some reason, I prefer the SZ ("who asked?" ). Anyway, if you need battery life that much, try to choose a model with those extended batteries... I know the SZ and the Dell has them, but I don't think the same applies to the W7J. If you really mind about that, one that sticks out at the back won't be a real concern... and, btw, I don't mind about laptops with a "butt" (am I allowed to say that here?).

hmm..the dell were my first choice, then i saw the asus ones...too bad the asus doesnt have an extended battery or i think that one would be the prize for me..the 14 or 13 inch one.

So i may re look at the dell and the sony.

Just read a review on the Sony SZ series. You might want that over the Asus because of the battery life. The Sony SZ reportedly get 4.5-5 hours off a single charge. The Asus only gets like 2.5-3 hours.

SZ downside: Sony is a greedy company. You can't upgrade anything without paying a lot more than normal, and the HDD is not (easily) upgradeable.
