Dual monitor that detrimental to performance?

Hey everyone. I just received my e1705 with 2gb ram t7200 7900gs etc. I love it and it plays games to my expectations. My issue seems to be when i have my Dell 2005fpw hooked up to the DVI out on the back of the laptop and I do 2 screens. Granted i hvae to make the LCD 1680x1050 since that is max resolution, but when i have this monitor connected, my Notebooks performance goes to crap. Is this because the vid card is having to output at two different resolutions etc? Or is there something i can do aside from just disabling the 2nd monitor when i want to game to increase performance?

Make sure the color quality (8/16/32 bit) is the same for both monitors. There should not be a noticable performance decrease.
