$1000~ Laptop, Gaming

Well I'm looking to buy a $1000~ laptop after Christmas this year, Its going to be for school but I have some gaming in mind for it(hey a little CS:S in study hall never hurt, hah I'd probably get caught anyway)

I was looking at this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834115246

Kinda ugly, but it looks like it might get the job done.

Some things I am looking for in a laptop

- 15.4" screen or larger
- 1GB of ram, no less
- Hard drive size not important
- Drive burners not important(DVD-ROM drive needed)
- Must have 802.11b/g support
- Decent GPU, notebook above is a X1600, its mainly going to be for CS:S, not a demanding game by any means, my 6800gt runs it 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF all settings maxed out AND gets 100fps...1280x800 should be feasible, no?
- CPU is not an issue, my desktop has a AMD A64 3000+, anything that can give similar performance is good( With as fast as mobile processors are mhz for mhz compared to desktop CPUs, not to mention everything is dual core now Its not a big deal)

Any suggestions

eh I game at school, not as much as I used to but I still do when I have a spare moment. In fact on the last day of last term our IT class had a class-LAN of CS:S and CoD2... I did pwn those n00bs :P

Seriously though that Acer doesn't look too bad for your purposes. Have a squiz around on the FS section of this site lots of X1600 equipped laptops are popping up. Plus read alot fo reviews before you pruchase, there is one on the newegg site saying it overheats frequently: I'd look into that. You might also consider Asus but they're a bit more expensive with much better build quility and less problems.

P.S. for the CPU make sure it's at least Core Du if not C2D for future proofing

Trust me I'd love to buy an asus, but the cheapest one with a x1600 is $1,700

I dont have any suggestions at that price.

I wont a new sports car for $10,000.

yeah man for a gaming laptop your gonna need to up your budget a bit. they just simply are not that cheap.

try a barebones S96j. can get it around $1100 with an x1600. Core2 Duo is offered for a bit more from some vendors.

Yeah, CS:S is completely bottlenecked by my CPU on my desktop, unless I turn the resolution up to 1920x1440 with 4xAA but the x1600 looks like it will run the game at 1280x800 just fine. But people here gave me reason to doubt acers build quality, not to mention how hard will it be to turn the 2 Fat32 60GB partitions into 1 NTFS? It looks like I'm going to have to do that. Asus notebooks look really nice, like I said I think the acer is kinda ugly.

80% of the users here are who give neg review to popular laptop companies are newbs. its because they own something a little more expensive. acers build quality is fine for a $1000 dollar budget system. you cant expect so much when you dont have much to spend
post #11 of 14
personally i dislike acers build quality, i find it a bit cheap and the feel of the plastic just to me feels inadequate on many of their models. that said for $1000 there is not alot you can expect. Asus may well be ugly but for their prices the quality is higher than could often be expected and they feel solid.

dont call 80% of the people who give a negative review of a company or their products noobs just because those people own a more expensive system. its true that there is a difference and those peoples perspectives are from the side of owning that more expensive system but that doesnt make them noobs. the popular companies all have those here who will forever defend them and those who will always deride them. take those out of the picture and see what the general feeling on the company is and you will see that the overall impression you get about a brand from these boards is most often right.

i had an acer last week, upgraded ram still not a decent gaming option ??
i took it back and got an asus notebook N80 series with a NVIDIA GeForce 9300m GS . its doing much better. allowed me to play lost planet extrema condition. this is without doing any tweaking to it, and its running VISTA ( yuck, planing to go to XP or win.7 soon) any way its a great comp and it was right around $700 out the door at best buy.
oh ya ,and its a sweet looking laptop to boot. not that looks of it is a big deal, but some care. mine is a dark blue with water spots and a web background. it looks really cook in the light .
i think it will really rock with a better OS. my acer video was a 3.5 , this asus is a 4.6. thats in there windows experience index (some thing they use as a guide for what they will run without problems) you will see this when you start shopping if its new to you like it was for me.

any way just wanted to put that out there for ya.

mostly i play command and conquer games. with this laptop i get graphics in the game i never knew existed, and i thought they were great on my desktop be for. its playing C&C red alert 3 great with no lag and the coolest graphics ever. dude they even show shade from cloud's passing over the land and you can see the guys inside the jeeps and bikes. and the water is amazing!!!!

OK maybe I'm a lil to excited about C&C but i just found so much more with this new laptop and graphics.
and there built in factory warranty is unbelievable, gotta love it. check it out be for you buy best buys warranty.

any how, god luck in your search, check out best buy for there asus's you should be able to find one to suit you.

as for knocking the acer as a newbie, not my intention. in shore they have some great computers

my dream is also to buy a gaming laptop...and it will come true soon..
anyway good luck for u

I'm not shore this truly counts as a gaming laptop, as they said you gotta shell out the big bucks for one of them. but for a casual gamer on a budget, its a great choice. oh ya and all i could afford.LOL
but its performance is way better than the other one and i keep being told if i get rid of Vist it will greatly help. add to that NVIDIA video chip and i should be doing well enough for all my needs. i cant play lost planet on high rezz. but at least i can play it. with a lil tinkering i think this will become a decent game computer, not a great gamer in the $1600 and up version but i will be able to enjoy many games i could never touch on my desktop.
i don't play on line so i don't know it it has enough go go juice for that, so don't jump on this model without looking closely at your needs. i suspect for a few more $$ it might be possible to go up to the next level in the ASUS line. after i get this thing tweaked out a bit ill pass on the new status. after all we all know a new out of the box computer be it laptop or desktop is full of trial garbage and other stuff to slow it down.
the new computers are getting faster even in the low end $$ range. unfortunately the games are getting larger and much more needy, a conspiracy between the game makers and the video card makers. ( oh wait, are they not the same people. funny how that works out. )

sorry for the book, short version is
check out the ASUS line at best buy. it may well fit your needs.I'm very impressed with mine.
