LCD screen wearing?

post #1 of 10
Thread Starter
How does a laptop's lcd light wear out? If it does wear out does it have a bulb that can be easily replaced?

I have a z60m which is of the widescreen variety and I just want to know what to expect and do when the times comes.

The bulb that you are referring to is called a CCFL, or backlight. From firsthand experience, I can tell you that it is a nightmare procedure. Some have changed them relatively easy, but on the two occasions that I tried, I broke the bulbs. (they are very fragile)

I would expect that you shoiuld get a great deal of life out of your LCD. I have a perfectly working 701CS from the mid-90s and it is still all original.

@tfflivemb2,
Can you show me a pic of that bulb? I think i would rather change it myself than to allow the technician to do it for me as this will cost more than a few dollars in Singapore. How would you go about taking out that bulb from that LCD panel? Can show me? Thanks.

I would use this as a reference.

It isn't easy to do yourself. You can have moniserve do it for you for a little over $100USD, depending on the size of the screen. There are pics of the bulbs there, as well as in the tutorial above.

auntyspy999,

can you help me to repost the link again. I cannot see the link because it is directed to thinkpad forum. I am banned by that forum. Please help me by posting the pics directly into here. As for moniserve, i also cannot see the site.

This should explain very well how a CCFL tube works.
