Sager 5760 - Which Vendor?

Thread Starter
I want to buy a Sager 5760-V with all the bells and whistles, and I'm looking for advice.

From what I can tell, it doesn't make much sense to include the TV Tuner because it isn't fully compatible with MCE. Any comments on this?

I plan on the following options:

- Core 2 Duo T7200
- 2GB Ram
- XP Pro
- Internal Bluetooth
- 0 Dead Pixel Policy
- 100GB 7200RPM SATA

Any thoughts on my upgrade choices?

One final question... How to decide between PCTorque, DiscountLaptops, or PowerNotebooks???? They all seem to be about the same price. Who will be there for me when I need support or drivers?

Before opting for the M1710 (in large part due to time constraints), I had settled on xoticpc.com. Justin is very patient and most helpful. I would recommend them without hesistation fwiiw.

I ordered my 5760 from DiscountLaptops, and so far the experience has been pleasent. They were very straight forward with the delay I would be facing because I ordered a T7600 CPU in my Sager.

I think any of the big three (DiscountLaptops, PCTorque, XoticPC) will do an excellent job in getting you a top notch system.

PCTorque. No question.

I got mine from DiscountLaptops. Top Service

Is there an advantage to buying from one of the "big 3" vendors mentioned above as compared to buying directly from Sager?

More often than naught the prices are lower it seems.

More often than not, the prices are lower, plus you have someone to help you deal with Sager should the language barrier prove too difficult. No offence is meant to anyone.

I bought mine from Pctorque. Best experience ever, and I have had many experiences buying laptops. I received mine only 3 days after ordering. Now I know this is probably rare, but hey it happened for me. I would also advise not to get the zero dead pixel policy. Everyone I know who has got a 5700 series computer has had no dead pixels. So, it is more than likely a waste of money.

I bought my Sager directly from Sager. Even talked to them before I ordered and had a great experince. They were very friendly and helpful. To go along with what K1tty said, I did not have the zero-dead pixel warrenty and received my Sager with 0 dead pixels.

About the time I joined the boards, dead/lit pixels seemed to be a common enough problem that people were posting dancing AW & banana dudes in an effort to superstitiously circumvent receiving a screen w/ bad pixels.

Not that I read most of the threads around here, but the ones that I have read, there's been no such nonsense (fun as it was) and I haven't really run into any complaints about dead pixels. Perhaps the QT finally was brought into line regarding LCDs. Or the manufacturers started paying attention and stopped shipping units that were lit/dead.

Don't know the whys or wherefores, but it looks good pixel-wise for current buyers.

I ordered my 5750 w/7800 gtx from powernotebooks.com through Ron Baird. He was very thorough througout the entire ordering process and I was always well informed. Nothing bad to say about powernotebooks.com whatsoever. Lifetime toll free tech suppport too...

they're all pretty solid, you might as well go for the one that gives you the best price (note, pctorque is giving a free headset with purchase)

i'd also like to note, lifetime toll free tech support is bogus, since this forum is pretty much the same thing, except that it's also available 24/7

I found DiscountLaptops to be very open and informative. I bought from PCTorque, and before the T7200 was available. Very happy with them. The T7200 should be a good choice, because I think the others are overpriced. I got 2GB Ram and its great. I skipped getting XP Pro, and loaded my own licensed XP Pro and drivers from the CD provided - which was easier than I expected. I really like the Bluetooth and the software is great (BlueSoleit) in my opinion (others hate it - check google). I got the Dead Pixel Policy - but I could afford it. I might not if it didn't make that big a difference to me, because you will likely save your $200 and still get a perfect screen. I got the 100GB 7200 SATA and its great. I also got the $25 extra drive chassis - which is also SATA. Since then I got an 160G drive for my extra drive bay and finally got it working. Trick was to (1) make sure it was pushed in far enough (if it sticks out at all - you missed), and (2) I had to configure the 2nd SATA drive in BIOS under the "do not boot from section" because it kept trying to boot the 2nd SATA no matter how I configured the BIOS boot sequence. Putting the 2nd drive under "do not boot" section did the trick. Now I flip back and forth - between shutdowns, not hotswap - and switch from DVD/RW and 160G HD in my second bay. Very nice. I got the TV tuner and the GO 7900GTX video and run 1920x1200 with no problems. The TV tuner is a novelity for me at the moment but it works great under XP Pro. I don't use MCE, so I can advise about that. Good luck, enjoy.

Thanks everyone for the great replies. I really appreciate hearing about personal experiences with the 5760. I'm very sure now that I'm making a good choice. I went ahead and attempted purchasing from Discountlaptops. Paid with PayPal eCheck. Had to wait a week for the check to clear. Then a week later I got an email telling me that the 7900GTX cards were all on back order and that I have to wait until November for my new toy to ship!!!! Oh, well. I guess I'll have to wait. I took everyone's advice and I ordered without the dead pixel policy. We'll see what happens.
