Gateway MX6448 AMD Turion 64 X2 1gb ATI 1150 128mb (shows 256mb/hypermemory?) 15.4 WXGA LCD 120gb MINI Review

Did anyone jump on this BB lappie? I picked one up yesterday and I'm quite impressed. Great power and decent graphics for under $700.00. (retail $849.99, currently sold out) This machine can run most non 3d games pretty well! The battery life is so so with the 6 cell battery (est 2hrs) but the LCD, speakers, design and price makes up for it.

Besides you can always buy an 8 or 12 cell battery. I also noticed this lappy runs pretty cool and is pretty darn sturdy for the money.

Pros:
Fast duo core x2 turion
Super nice 15.4 LCD- as nice as my Wife's fairly recent Sony Vaio
Great sounding speakers
great design/light weight
Bluetooth (i think it has it according to the manual)
Ati 1150 is actually pretty decent (can run CS source, Nba live 07, nfl 07 with decent settings-- med to high. BF2 in low and slow15-20fps lol)
xp media center
1gb ram
Price/value

Cons
120GB 4200 rpm
6 cell battery (around 2.5 hrs under normal usage)

If anyone is intersted in purchasing a great little amd x2 and plan on using it for light gaming I highly recommend this model. I truely believe Gateway laptops are well built and offer the best bang for the buck in terms of performance/pricing.

not too many people interested in this laptop eh?

Sweet machine dude...... how fast is that Turion 64 x2?
Yeah.... the HDD is too slow. 5400 rpm should be the standard these days.
Even for non gamer like myself.....

It's a 1.6ghz x2 and I do agree the 4200rpm is abit slow but I plan on using this puppy as my everyday workhorse for general use so its ok for now. I might even cancel my AW m5550 order since I'm very happy with this laptop and I don't have to wait 2 + months for an Alienware laptop that has been known to have random shutdown issues... Too bad you can't upgrade the video card for this lappy : (

Otherwise it's a great all around laptop for the $.

For $700 I might be willing to give up a bit of performance on the graphics side. They are still sold out and listed $850 now.

Anyone know roughly how well the integrated graphics performs vs a dedicated card like the m9700 or x3/700?

ummm the m9700 has a top of the line nvidia 7900 and an x700 laptop will blow any Intergrated graphics card away! But if you are going the integrated graphics card route this is probably the best one available. (Ati 1150 xpress 128mb/256mb showing in dxdiag) Other than Video performance this laptop performs as well as a 1500- 2000k laptop. It has been rock solid and plays games such as Nba live 07, NFS UG, madden 07, UT 04 etc all great! (med to high settings)

Games like bf2 or doom will run but a low 15-25 fps rate on low settings.

Actually its back in stock! http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1156606934474

Best Buy now gots one for $850 with a 160gb hardrive and 2gb of ram. Also the ATI 1150 and AMD TL-52. I've been thinking about getting it, but I'm a little iffy on getting a Gateway.

Pros:
Design
duo core x2
great graphics card (best intergrated ati available)
2gb ram
15.4 bright screen as nice as a Vaio!
$849.00

Cons
160gb @4200rpm

Hmm for that price?? Sounds like a great deal to me despite the 4200rpm hd. Btw my Gateway has been great for me! (in the past also) plus the speakers are one of the loudest and best sounding speakers available in a 15.4" notebook! IF you looking for a laptop in the 700-900 range; these 2 models are pretty hard to beat!

But the looks are just plain to me. I like the way the Dell (the other ones I'm looking at) looks a lot more.

Well its sorta plain but simple and elegant in IMO. (Besides I have an AW coming in for style lol) Dell models sorta looks plain to me and they don't offer AMD processors. But for the $ you can't go wrong... What are you going to use the laptop for?
Well, aren't intel processors better? And I'll be using it for surfing/word, and my architecutre class. We use Autodesk Architectural Desktop.

Well the duo core 2 processor do perform abit better but cost more... usually by a 2-300 dollars. If your not going to play any games and plan on just surfing the web/word this would be a great laptop. Plus you can even play some games with the ati 1150 graphics card : ) Good luck with whichever laptop you choose!

The gateway does seem like an extremely good value. I'm just worried about battery life. One of the biggest pluses with the Dell is the 9 cell battery.

The battery life on the 6 cell is around 2 to 2.5 hrs... But you CAN purchase a 8 or 12 cell for this laptop to get around 4-6 hrs+ battery life. These can be found for under 50 bucks on ebay... this model shares the same battery as the gateway m680 and the other 15.4 models gateway sells.

I bougth the MX6453 @ Bestbuy Monday and even thou it say's 4200, the drive is actually a 160g Hitachi 5400. Machine seems pretty snappy and the screen is nice, I'm not sure if it is as nice as a Vaio but not much is. Ati Catalyst and device manager say the graphics is a 200m express. I don't know if this is the sames as the 1150 or not. In Xp the driver say's X200m and I have it dual booted with Vista64 and that shows the 1150 card.

So Far seems to run pretty good with about 2 hour battery. I don't like to dim the LCD so you might be able to stretch it a little more. Seem pretty light for it's size as well.

Have a good day!

I agree with Bryan I got the Gateway MX6453 and I think its a good lappy. I read about dell users griping about there screens but to be honest to expect a great screen on this gateway either. You will notice alot brighter at the bottom then at the top no matter how you view it. Its not a huge deal on the desktop looks fine may notice it on some dvd's.

The sound isnt bad but I recently found a game where the integrated sound wasnt matching up with the action. So if you game and like the sound get a pcmcia.

I had a huge gaming notebook had a board burn up in it.. got it fixed and got rid of it. I wanted a notebook to use while travel that would run some games that I like but the bare minimum worked for me.

This notebook answers the call. I got about 2 hours with the included battery while playing a DVD. I also started a thread with my model and games Ive ran on it.

For $849 you cant go wrong, you can always swap harddrive in future if you want.

The battery is taking a poo on my 7422gx. I only get about 50 min on it now. On Ebay I can find a 8 or 12 cell battery to get 4-6 hrs of battery life for less than $50??? Do you have any links, because I'm not really sure what to look for?

RyanFL, the batteries i mentioned are for this model not for the 7422gx... do a search on ebay for "Gateway Battery" and see if they have anything for the 7000 series Gateway models.

I just used this link and the price is $999. Is Best Buy just jacking up the price because they can?
