Trip on increasing performance/battery life/etc. - 9400/1705

Guys, unless there already exists a thread with subj., perhaps you could share tips on how to tweak the hardware to either:

1) boost performance
2) increase battery life

There exist so many utilities (rmclock, etc.) that are rather confusing, yet some of you have figured it out how to use them to get the maximum out of your systems.

It is especially useful for Core [2] Duo machines.

So, can you share your secrets and [maybe] this can be made a sticky?

Thanks!

When I need to take notes in class or during a meeting at work, I do the following:

--Disable wireless
--Turn off A/V
--Turn off defrag (if you use a third party idling one like I do)
--Turn down screen brightness
--Set screen to turn off after 1 minute
--Lose the USB hardware
--Get that CD/DVD out of there
--Before you know you will be running on battery, hibernate/standby your PC instead of a full shutdown
--Set it to standby on close and don't hesitate to use it all the freaking time
--Don't browse your computer, have the files open already

How much time do you get on your battery with such routine? (btw, is it a 9-cell?)

What's "third party idling"?

Perhaps anyone else could share actual tweaks (using one of performance monitoring/adjustment utilities)?

3rd party defraggers (i.e. Diskeeper) defrag whenever your computer is idle (not in use)

With screen backlight at 0, no wireless or USB and watching divx-movies I get 3 hours 15 minutes, not to bad I guess.
