monitor troubles

this one isn't really alienware's fault, but it is still annoying. in the ongoing random, totally improbable troubles with my computer, the monitor seems to have died today. i tried to bring it back from sleep (just the monitor was sleeping, not system) and it flashed the screen for a second, then went black. i don't mean it went black like it was showing a black background, i mean it is not showing anything. the screen looks like it is off, even tho the green power light is on.

it is a benq fp731 that came with my alien. i have tried restarting, replugging in, and that stuff, but it is hard to try anything else when i have no screen. this monitor is 1 yr and 3 months old.

any ideas?? or do i have a real excuse to buy a 21" widescreen

15 months is pretty weak for a monitor.. unless you left it on 24/7 365 with screensavers..
Have you tried a different monitor with the system to make sure it's not the GPU or the cable? and/or tried the defective monitor with a different system? I'd try all the above and still get a 24" or 30" LCD

BTW, if you're brave and know what you're doing you can open the monitor up and check to make sure the bulb is getting voltage. Could be as simple as a fuse (I threw away at least 5 microwaves before I learned that they blow internal fuses real easy and they cost less that $1), but of course if you have no experience with electricity (especially in avoiding capacitors) then don't even think about opening it up... also might want to see what the warranty is and I'd do that before opening it up, as that'll probably void any remaining warranty...

dman i knew i could count on you! i will try a different monitor and dif computer tomorrow, no time the last few days. i agree 15 mo. is weak. i turn it off every night, it sleeps after 20 min, and the whole comp was just plain off for prolly 2 months of the 15.

i was an electrician for a few months, 3 years ago, but i don;t think i will open it up. i hope nothing works, so i can get a new one tho. only a 21" tho, i can't afford anytihng bigger. i gotta get a new car in a few weeks...

Erh, that would have to be real brave. There's a few kV inside, y'know? If you attach a DMM to the 'tube', that DMM dies. If you touch it yourself, you'll either be shaking like Ronald Reagan 5 years ago or be like RR right now.

I know what capacitors can do, my grandpa was an IBEW electrician for many years..
So that's why I prefaced it with if you're brave.. Probably 99% of people will avoid electricity at all costs. I try to avoid it, but I'm a homeowner and sometimes you have to deal with it, then again I tend to shut off the main fuses just to be 100% sure

Viewsonics are good monitors. I bought one back in 2000 and it's still humming along fine.
