What happened to the Extreme Laptops?

Thread Starter
How come no one is building laptops with the Core 2 Duo Extreme processors. Many manufacturers used to produce machines with the AMD FX or Intel Pentium 4 processors for the extreme gaming experience. Since Intel released the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo, all that activity has ceased. There are still manufacturers out there offering Pentium 4 laptops - WHY??? Why on earth would anyone buy a Pentium 4 or AMD FX powered laptop when they have been eclipsed by the Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme that uses half the power, half the battery consumption, and twice the performance. How long will I have to wait to see a Quad core processor in a laptop?

Probably the reason is that the Core 2 Duo's themselves are so popular that they can't keep the normal ones in stock long enough. Now, with that idea, imagine the Extreme verisons. Sager would turn into Alienware in waiting time.

I'm with you on the idea of buying 'the best', but I think that the re-sellers have the customer's best intentions at heart. Honestly, you think they'd hold back selling the best for a revenue?

As far as the Quad verisons, they still aren't even close yet. I haven't talked to any Sager re-sellers about Sager quad-core (but I will now), but I don't think it will be out by the end of this month. Maybe in time for the holiday season.

Errr, quad-core CPU's aren't even available yet. Kentsfield is still in final taping and Barcelona is a ways off. How in the world can they produce quad-core laptops with no quad-core CPU's?

With the power requirements and everything else surrounding the quad core(two Dies) it will be a while until we see a mobile version. And even then it will take a powerbrick the size of a car to power it.

As for why there are no C2D Extreme CPUs around, I've got a couple guesses.

1) Inventory. Trying to eliminate some of the stockpile of current CPUs before totally overshadowing them with the Latest/Greatest.

2) Cost. Perhaps they weren't making enough money on the P4EE market and figured that the C2D Extreme would lead the same way.

Don't know. Just guesses.
