Nightmare - Install ATI 9600 on Windows 2003

I'm having a terrible time installing ATI 9600 drivers on my Dell Inspiron 8600 running Windows 2003. The details of my configuration are:

Windows 2003 OS
Inspiron 8600, PM 1.7Ghz
128MB ATI Radeon 9600 PRO turbo
512MB 333Mhz DDR
60Gig Hd, 7200RPM
15.4WXGA
1300 B/G Wireless
4xDVDR+RW

I have tried the following install procedure:

Install Windows 2003
Install drivers from Dell CD (minus display drivers)
Install DirectX 9.0b
Install Omega drivers, version 2.5.22 [http://www.omegacorner.com/index_ati.html]
The result is a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

I also tried the latest Catylst (4.2) drivers from ATI [http://www.ati.com/products/catalyst/index.html], modded with Patje's Driver Heaven Mod Tool 1.7 [http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/]. Same result, BSOD.

I would greatly appreciate any help (don't make me beg).

Resolution

Ok, I got it working now. All of the drivers started installing after I set the video card's hardware acceleration to Full. I guess Windows 2003 defaults this setting to None. You can see a picture here [http://www.msfn.org/win2k3/hardwareacc.htm].

I hope this information helps someone. BTW, I'm using Omega drivers now.

Try these sites http://www.msfn.org/ and specifically http://win2k3.msfn.org/ the last one has an excellent guide to turning server 2003 into a "workstation" machine that still has all the 2003 capabilities. It's not specifically oriented to 2003 on a laptop but many things apply.

I am not going to flame but installing 2003 is just plain stupid. If you are a real licensee of win2k3, chances are that you wouldn't be installing them onto a laptop. Honestly, most "home/business" users do not know how to use the advanced features of 2003 so they should try to stick with XP.

Yeah i dont mean to mean or anything but i pretty much see little reasoning installing such an advanced os on a laptop

The main reason I'm using windows 2003 is for Windows Media Server 9.0, which is only available on this OS. I'm a software developer and I need these services for my current project.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback

My Windows 2003 license is perfectly legal. My company is a Microsoft Partner and, as such, has five MSDN Universal licenses.

HUH??? Did you actually say ...

Buddy boy you may not know enough about software development or how people that do get paid to do it work so that's enough on this topic.

Why don't you stick to helping answer questions related to the original posts?

My laptop is triple boot between linux, xp and 2003 server.

2003 server actually is a fine os for a laptop that has enough power.

Runnin' on my D800 w/M10. XP seems dated compared to the newer coding of Win03.

Hi Somms,

I left a follow up message for you over at Dell support. I got the ATI drivers working on Windows 2003 - I even got a better 3DMark03 score than with Windows XP (2761 versus 2741).

I do have a few annoyances though. Whenever I start a "fresh" instance of Internet Explorer it takes about 10 seconds to fully render. After the first instance loads, others load instantly, as expected. While the browser is "loading" (hung more like) the toolbar is transparent, showing the background behind.

I also notice tasks like dragging a link from IE's address bar onto the desktop take way too long. Again, this only happens the first time and performs much better if attempted subsequently.

In addition folder creation within Visual Studio can take several seconds. Do you see a pattern here? I suspect the ATI drivers are responsible because these symptoms did not exist before. Has anyone else running Windows 2003 experienced anything like this?

Thanks,
