7800GTX Performance

Thread Starter
I have an XPS2 that has been modded with a 7800GTX Go, currently it is overclocked to 440/1250 and things seem to be good apart from a heat issue which will be solved when i slap some AS5 on. My thing is that i have read on various sites that the 7800GTX should be capable of 8500 in 3dMark05 CPU dependant. Currently im scoring 7200ish at 1024x768 no AA/AF and 8000ish at 640x480 no AA/AF. So first up, when people generally quote a benchmark of 8500 im assuming thats at 640x480 and second i have also read that the CPU can be a bottleneck for the 7800GTX. Currently i have a 2ghz and 2gig of ram but im now considering maybe getting a 1.7 or a 1.8 and pin modding. Would this up my performance at all? Do those scores seem low for what i have now? Could my 2ghz CPU possibly be the bottleneck in my system?

Thanks for any help

I get 7258 @ 430/1150. Tried 430/1200 and only got low 7300s so reverted back. My card has a really bad heat issues even with AS5. The thing tops out at 93C after 15 mins of ATI Tool and 96C in CSS after 20 mins at 1920x1200 4xAF and 98C in FEAR. What the heck is wrong with my temps. It idles at 52-54. Should I apply AS5 to the memory banks on the card because I saw someone do it with their x300 card in their inspiron 6000. All these temps are reported with the nvidia driver temps. 8500 on 3dmark05 is probaly for the desktop versions which overclocks higher.

You may want to make sure the heatsink of your 7800 is sitting flush on the gpu.

I too had overheating issues, but I noticed the heatsink was not contacting the gpu 100%.

So I caked on the thermal grease to compinsate for the "gap", I know only a thin layer is the required amount but my temps now only reach low 80's after playing for a few hrs versus 90's before.

My idle is low 50's to upper 40's - depending on my room temp.

No it was definatly the laptop chip, the particular article in question can be found here but if your only getting 7200 with a 2.26ghz pinmodded then maybe he was plain ol wrong...

make sure ur fans are clean of dust... just a suggestion.

Could be a typo of 7500 instead of 8500. Highest I've heard was maybe 7800 and maybe 8000 with extreme cooling. Yes my fans are clean of dust. My gpu seems to idle at a normal temp. I will check the heatsink but last time I checked, I screwed down pretty hard with my Torx driver and didnt want to overtighten it and snap the card. I've heard of someone on this board doing that.

The highest I ever reached with mine was 8345 and that was at 500/1300 and very unstable. I just wanted to see how good a score i could get. At my normal clocks of 460/1150 I dont even break 8000(3Dmark05).

Also, if you are comparing benchmarks of desktop cards with the mobile version, you always have to subtract a bit.

My highest results are in my sig. Might try for 8k later - just so I can say I did it.

I'm right around 7500 with my clocks at 445/1200. Been thinking about bumping to 460/1250, prob would put me around 7700, but I don't have any problems playing games right now. Play WoW mostly, have all settings maxxed, playing at native 1920*1200.

My temps are fantastic, 49 C idle, and around 65ish under load for the most part. I did have a temp spike up around 72 C about a week ago...Still don't know what that was about. (measured through fangui)

I absolutely love my 7800 GTX (Thanks from ebay Bal)

So i take it the conclusion is that i should just keep my 2ghz CPU? It doesnt seem like its worth spending the money for the tiny gain i would get considering most games these days rely more on the GPU then the CPU...that said, if i can fix my temp issue would bumping my OC up to higher clocks, say 460ish, would that nuke my card if it was for prolonged use, ive heard some people saying clocks that high will make it go POP.

Correct.

i scored 8243 @ 475/1300(1.4v) w/83.90 xg drivers. the card was very stable but reached 105C, so i put it back down.
