Toshiba Satellite U205 CD/DVDS Problem

I am having a problem with the CD/DVD on my U205 notebook. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, if I put the CD into another notebook, the CD runs fine, back into the U205, nadda.

I spoke to Toshiba tech support and they had me delte and then reload the driver. That worked that one time, but I am still having the same problem. I have an external CD to use, but that is not a solution, only a temporary fix.
I think the CD/DVD is a Matshita UJ-842S, at least that is what the driver says.

Any assistance is appreciated. Looks like though I need to talk to Toshiba again.

Thanks

I've had a similar problem in the past with my laptops but in my case my Matshita (aka. Panasonic) DVD drive's laser pickup burned up or something.

Replacement with a different brand of DVD drive solved my problems entirely. From what I've heard, Panasonic-brand laptop DVD drives aren't all that robust--especially when high internal laptop temperatures are involved.

yep, the matshita drives are horrible...i had the same problems with many A100's...the worst not working right out of the box (well worked, but didn't read many burned DVD Sony -RW media). The only fix is getting a replacement with another brand like Pioneer, which if you are lucky enough you can find in the A100 sometimes.

this is a VERY common problem with matshita drives...Toshiba is clueless...i've had many support calls with them...same thing, uninstall drivers, etc. they are just picky drives...and they are loud. i'd just do a service call and get a new one (different brand). If you are out of warranty then you are out of luck.

You would think they would just stop putting in the matshita drives! Doesn't toshiba make their own anyway???

Thanks for the info. I called Tech Support and was referred to an authorized repair facility, luckily in the same town where I live. They said they need the laptop 5-7 days. Sounds hokey to me. Why would it take that long to diagnose and swap the CD/DVD? Finally they said I could leave it Friday morning, they would diagnose it and then I can pick it up that afternoon. Would have to come back to get the parts installed if need be.

They pretty much said the same thing to me. But I was so upset that this problem occured straight out of box that I just returned it and didn't look back. Now that I see that HP is just as shoddy quality (keyboard and HD), i'm actually entertaining the idea of going back to Toshiba since the cd drive was my only beef with it (and to a lesser extent heat on the bottom, but most lappy's have that problem). I figure if I get unlucky with the matshita again, i'll just do what you are and get a replacement drive with a service call.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Just to update. Toshiba tech couldn't find anything wrong, but ordered another CD/DVD anyway. Should have it mid-week.

I also had problems with the matshita drive. After 8 months of use, it started to give random errors . Toshiba changed it for a TEAC drive... it rocks!!! Almost a year a not even one problem ... good luck with your next drive!!
