Emachines Problem (failed mb?)

I'm having difficulties pointing out a problem with my grandparents computer. During boot up the windows splash screen when loading the bios gets scrambled in the center then the monitor goes black. After a bit you hear the regular windows startup noise but cant do anything since the black screen of course. Now normally when you press the power button it will shut down and was standard. Now there is no way to shut it off so we end up having to pull the plug. After that I tried to start it up again this time the monitor wont even show anything and stays black. The Frequencies stay at 0Hz and no input seems to be comming into the monitor at all. So I tried many diffrent monitors and same thing happens.

After this since the gpu it integrated into the board i thought it was a gpu problem and found a spare Ati card that i used in the pci slot. Same problem. One thing to note as when this problem started to arise the bios would boot up as normal. Then when in windows the screen would go black and try to load the bios again. After that all this started.

Do you think the motherboard itself could have gone bad? Ive ruled out so far the monitor and the gpu. No matter what happens the sound on the board still works. It seems windows is still booting but you can see anything not even the mouse or a blinking cursor as if it was a hd problem and the system did not boot properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

about 3 years old.
Clean with barily and dust and was kept in good condition.

Have you tried a reformat?

and can you get into the BIOS at bootup? There should be power management options in there where you can tell the computer what you want the power button to do.
This does kinda sound like the mobo is nearing death though... Setting the mobo back to default settings probably wouldn't hurt anything.

Yeah it is hit or miss when loading the bios most of the time the screen goes black before the bios even boots.

I have no clue on this, but what about the battery on the mobo? I've never had one die so I don't know how it effects the mobo, but I'm pretty sure they're just cheap watch batteries.. maybe someone else can chime in on if that's a possibility or not

I'm getting the same problems and I'm probably going to opt to get a new one off new egg along with the processor chip. It only has a celeron in it and i found out from my grandparents it was on sale to begin with at bestbuy. Taking a closer look at it; it may have been a returned one because of some scratches and other tool marks on the inside.

ooh, that's not good at all.. someone could've hit a capacitor or something and you'll have fun trying to figure out which one.
Hopefully they can bring it back. They shouldn't try to resell defective machines

take pics of all the cap's if you have a cam, to show us, coulda blown a cap prolly, but highly unlikely cause you woulnt boot with out it dying from heat

edit: by caps i mean all of the mobo with nothing blocking the view, more so near the I/O plate
edit again: when you used the video card, did it do the same exact thing or somthing diffrent? and did you change the bios settings to accomdate the video card?

its hit or miss on the bios now ill try to get a picture if i can find someone with a web cam.

Digital camera would be better if that's an option.. resolution on web cams won't show very much detail

It is not the cmos battery (the one on the mobo). Your problem is either the power supply or the motherboard. Do you have a spare power supply you can pop in?
If another power supply doesn't fix it, then there is some sort of issue, possibly a hairline crack, in the motherboard.

A75, I hope your grandparents bought that computer with an extended warranty and they have patience. I've had tons of experience with eMachines problems working in tech support, and it's not good.

eMachines made an enormous batch of potentially defective motherboards. By enormous/potentially, I mean any eMachines in the past 4 years (discounting within 1 year from now) that ends up having a motherboard issue can wait up to over a month (if at all) for a motherboard replacement. There is a nationwide manufacturer's backorder (meaning no matter who you are or where you bought it, you're waiting a while for a replacement motherboard).

My suggestion is to buy a new computer. You can get one that's quite a bit better than that for around $3-400 nowadays.

Agreed. Mr. Spoon and I worked for the same tech support company (I still do) and it's been nearly a year for me and we are still required to mention that Emachine motherboards are currently on back order from the manufactuer in our post-dispatch expectation script.
