Do you guys think I got a good deal? I was only able to get the core 2 duo with 2mb cache, does this make a huge difference? I will also be upgrading the ram later to 667mhz, how big of a diff does this make?

sounds like a good deal. Link to coupon?

Yeah, that seems good. I recently bought an e1705 for about 1,800 and it was similar to yours -- the only differences are mine has 2 GB RAM and a 120 GB HDD. Ah, and I bought the at-home warranty. Though I also paid tax, which was over $100.

Ah, and I only got 10% off, because the 20% was only offered for a configuration which I didn't exactly want. I probably could've saved another hundred dollars or so with the $300 off coupon instead of the 10% but meh. I still feel like I got a good deal, and this thing is blazingly fast. Plus, the screen is beautiful.

good buy! I remember buying a 9300 pretty maxed for that price and look at it now lol, the next gen max for the same price :-p almost wish i waited lol

I ended up paying 1330 for 2.0ghz CD (C2D was not out yet), 512mb@ 533mzh, 60gig 7200 RPM SATA, with WUXGA screen, no extra warranty. 2 Gig of 667 ram from newegg for 180, plus 600 for 7900GTX from Bal, minus 330 for sold 7900gs = almost 1800$ for almost the best laptop performance available, save the C2D, and the huge 19inch laptops with SLI for 4000 dollars. This was mid June, but didnt get the GTX til 3 weeks ago.

And if you OC your 7900gs to 480/600, which was what i had mine at before i sold it, i was getting like 4200-4300 in 06. I wouldnt recommend volt modding it for higher OC due to heat, since the 7900gs you have only has 1 heat pipe.

I have not done actual benchmarking myself, but from what I have read it is a wash. The 533 mhz is CAS 4 and the 667 mhz is CAS 5. Basically the faster memory has to wait longer anyway, so it ends up being about equal.

Think of driving 40 miles and hour and stopping every 10 miles, and compare that to driving 50 miles and hour and stopping every 10 miles as well. Assuming you had the exact same total travel time, what good did it do to drive faster and stop more? Maybe that's not the best example but it's all I could think of right now.

I would go with the cheaper one of the two when you do decide to upgrade.

It's a decent price. You could save a couple hundred more if you were eligible for EPP pricing or if you bought in August with a $750 off coupon. Or possibily if you waited another month, when there would probably be better pricing @ the lull after back to school sales & before Christmas. Or by going for a refurbished (returned) notebook through Dell Outlet. But all in all, you got a very good system @ a good price.

I have that identical computer except I got the T7400 chip(4MB instead of 2MB L2 cache and 2.0Ghz).

I paid $1391.00 using a 20% off coupon I found on the net. Total out the door price with tax was $1474.46

argh, does the 4mb version run much better than the 2? I hope it will be okay for future gaming/vista.

I would have highly suggested a 7200 RPM HD.

I would have too, but he could either replace it himself for a way lower price, and even if he did, ive had both 5400rpm and 7200rpm hard drives in laptops, and they arent *to me* worth the price especially coming from dell

i just got my dell ins 9400 today
intel core duo 2 2 gig
2 gb ram 533mhz
ati x 1400 gpu
i cant believe how it played quake 4 on ultra high settings but it did with ati..i am quiet suprised..there were jerks when i was outside in the open but inside i just felt i was on Nvidia 7900 gs..there was this warning that 500 mb would occupy 3d texture and i went for it..and after that i just got lost in the game.ATI X 1400 is a big suprise from Dell..i dont regret not going for Nvidia but i was wondering how realistic would the game be when i would use nVIDIA.

yeah you got a good deal

i was also looking at the laptop and the other 17inch ones

i think i'm just going to hold out until i can find a laptop on the outlet with uxga, C2D and the 512mb video card for $2000 and under, so i'm looking at the m90 or xps 1710

it'd be nice to play the current games with near max settings, i'm not sure if the 7900gs can do that

Here's what I ordered last night.

Inspiron 1705
Intel Core 2 Duo T7200(2ghz, 4mb cache)
1gb 667mhz DDR2
256 Geforce 7900GS
8x DVDRW
100gb 7200rpm HDD
Intel Pro Wireless
17" WSXGA+
1yr warranty

Got all of that for $1170 with tax, tag and title. This was a refurb. Not too bad in my opinion. I feel comfortable with the refurbs from Dell. I'm typing this on a dell desktop refurb that I've had for three years with no probs.

Yeah, you just have to hit the Dell site late at night and keep refreshing. I found my comp about this time last night. About a week ago I found a comp that I really liked, I passed it up and it was quickly snatched by someone else. It was the same that I quoted except 2gb of ram and the upgraded screen. It was also about $300 more. Well worth the price though. I like the one I got. I just went in to it without rushing. I knew I would find another deal if I kept looking.
