Ubuntu and Xgl

Hi again

I've been very happy with my expirence in Ubuntu. I was searching online and I saw this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDD1N7NdCmI I was so amazed at how smooth everything was and how the windows moved around. I was wondering how I would get my setup like that. Would I just need to install XGL?

Any help would be great

Thanks!

If you go to ubuntu forums there's about a million howto's for xgl/compiz implementation. Honestly, I think you should just install Edgy, which has native support for aigxl/compiz.

I had all of the nifty effects going a few months ago, but there were issues. For one, direct rendering ceased to work. So may opengl apps like blender and games in cedega did not work. Google earth had severe overlay issues.

I'm gonna give it a shot on my experimental machine pretty soon and see if the problems are resolved.

millions of howtos on ubuntuforums for sure...pick one and run with it. make sure to set it up so you can always log into regular xorg for games and other opengl stuff like BT said...not very hard to do that. last time i did this (about a month ago) i found that xgl crashed every time i'd type something be it a word document or chating in gaim or even posting a thread here...if left alone (i left it overnight to its own devices) and it was just fine, but typing wasn't so fine. i guess what i am trying to say is: its experimental for a reason...don't fudge your production machine!

Bah, I've used Aiglx before. It was fun and cool looking but it got boring. I didn't like having to disable a certain plugin thing every time I wanted to watch a movie. The effects and stuff were sweet, even on integrated graphics.

I've decided not to install xgl due to all the problems i've been hearing about I'll just sit back and watch to see if there are any major fixes

with the latest drivers (note: not in ubuntu repos yet) the x300 should work ok with baryl/xgl unlike earlier versions. use the install guide found on baryl forums and you should be ok.

btw... they above error i listed (where xgl crashes if you give it too much input / type too much too fast on the keyboard)... i have narrowed it down to FGLRX as the issue, since the same does not happen with an identical (ubuntu dapper i386, beryl 0.1, xgl) setup on my desktop which has an nvidia card
