Please Help ! Frustrated!

I recently uninstalled Kasperksy firewall after trying it out because I found my computer ran too slow with it. I then reinstalled avast and the trial of Lavasoft firewall. Now now none of my windows services work. I thought it was a virus but even avast wouldn't load so I uninstalled it and did a fresh install and did a boot time scan which yielded nothing neither did spy sweeper or ad aware. My worry is that because I did not reboot when prompted by the apps to restart and instead did the uninstall and installs in one session this may have corrupted something. Does anyone know what I can do? I went to microsoft's site but they list XP SP2 and it requires being run through update but it wont load. I can't run an installion disc because I didn't get one when I bought my laptop. I am currently running a Satellite M105-S1011 with window xp SP2.

Hopefully, you had System Restore running. Just load up an older image (before this installation saga) and proceed from there.

Also, I know you don't have an install CD, but you should be able to get one from another computer or from the internet and try to force an repair/upgrade cycle that might clear it up.

System restore won't run. It shows hard drive activity when I try to run it but it just doesn't run. Neither does the User accounts option in control panel. I tried it in safe mode too but no luck

You really need to get the OEM CD's from whoever you bought it from. Failing that, buy XP and download whatever drivers you still need from the hardware vendors.

Just a couple of nights ago I ran into the same sorts of problems with Avast and Zone Alarm. After uninstalling the programs, I wasn't able to get AVG to install and work properly and Windows was a mess. I had to go into the Registry and remove every trace of Avast and ZA, and then AVG and Windows finally worked properly.

FWIW: I used a free program called RegSeeker.

I tried deleting all the related registry values I found but system restore and the other windows programs still won't function.

Starcub, I bought the notebook from radioshack the only software that came with it was this DVD with a factory image. I really don't want to have to reformat, I'd rather leave that as a last desperate resort

It's possible that the Registry has nothing to do with your problem, but if it does, a lot of items wouldn't be recognized easily. Did you use a utility to help you search. If not, one might help you locate quite a few additional items. Good luck.

BTW: With Avast, I had to edit "permissions" in order to delete all the items.

Yeah I used regseeker, regcleaner, ccleaner and also checked the registry myself using regedit. I don't think avast is the problem but I made sure I wiped all the programs that I was dealing with before the problems but that still does nothing. I ran task manager while trying to start system restor and it shows rstui.exe which leads me to start wondering if it's a virus but all the scanners show that my system is clean. I'm trying to get a Version of XP Home but which version would I need the full or the upgrade, I know the OEM will erase everything which is what I don't want

Found this which may help. Looks like the same problem you're experiencing.

I assumed that when you said this:

...that meant you had no such disk.

Nevertheless I find that a good reason for a reformat/re-install arises about once every three months. It can be good for diagnosing problems, and sometimes it's the only way to fix a problem. A little foresight by planning partitioning and backups makes it a relatively quick and painless process.

Well I bit the bullet and just reformatted and did every. I wish I could have found out what specifically went wrong. Thanks for the help and input everyone.
