download manager -- dont know

wireless -- gnome-network-manager (see Fedora's site for details)

kicker apps -- plenty of applets to put on your bars..including weather

link apps to desktop -- just drag the icon from the menu to the desktop to create shortcut, or right click on desktop and pick "Create Launcher"

Gnome/gtk things I use in KDE:

mplayerplug-in (kaffeine plugin just isn't as stable)
gaim (though I'm using Kopete again... it's gotten a lot better than it used to be)

I also use (other non-KDE things):

firefox
thunderbird
gimp
OOo

The best thing about all of this is that you can pretty much pick and choose.

I'm not partial to NetworkManager.... makes WAY too many assumptions.. but with that said, it is very Windows like in its behavior.

Thanks ABF, but I was thinking about linking a "./blah" type executable from the CLI to an icon. Actually it's been a while since I've tried to do this in KDE, but I remember not being able to figure it out. I'm guessing I could probably emerge kget or get some kind of d/l manager working in Gnome, or at least I hope so since that is probably a high demand app.

I personally prefer fluxbox (blackbox isn't as nice . Anyway, for those that want KDE without all the extra bloat, you could check out the Mini KDE project. Finally, for a download manager, I would use d4x. Nothing beats it as far as I know under Linux for downloads.

I use a combo of KDE and flux depending on mood/app that I'm running/time of day, etc. lol

I personally prefer 'K' apps over gnome apps.

My main apps:

Firefox
Konqueror
K3b
Kaffeine
Krita
KOffice Suite (because OpenOffice is the biggest peice of bloaty trash this side of redmond!)
XMMS (ditched Amarok since I got rid of my iPod)
Yakuake (my absolute most used program)

I never run wine apps in KDE though, as they run much better in flux... KDE is definitely a heftier WM, but it runs fast on my laptop, and I have grown to *hate* Gnome for all it's wierdness, ugly apps, etc.

I've also slimmed down my KDE as much as possilbe, removing apps and whatnot that aren't needed. Synaptic? Nuked. Kontact? Toast. All the random Media Players I don't use? Well, you get the point.

I also occasionally will just run X and a terminal, screw the WM entirely.

olly... if you get some nice gtk themes going gnome can actually be set up quite well. throw in a little beryl or compiz and it ain't too bad. to me at least, also seems faster than kde, but even more importantly, total lack of konqueror (anything that remotely reminds me of IE file manager / internet browser gets nuked) and better menu layouts is what gets gnome my vote over kde.

that said... currently using E17, when properly configured its rather stable and nice.

abf: I just can't get to like Gnome. Granted, I haven't tried it with beryl or compiz, but considering the state of my graphics card (onboard intel jobby), I'm not sure I want to even get into it.

In the end though, something about gnome just turns me off, a lack of polish if nothing else is how I feel.

As for Konqueror, I like the feel of it, and really had no objections to Windows Explorer's layout. Lol, I think that we aren't going to convince each other here though.

While I may disagree with hyou myself, it is a perfect example of why Linux(The OS) is good, you have that choice so that if you want something of your tastes you have it, but you also have something for the rest of us(e17 for me, Gnome for others, Flux for some, etc)
