Dell XPS - 3.4 EE

I am thinking of buying a XPS, do the P4 3.4 EE and the 2 GB DDR really improve the performance. They cost 2,200 $ alone, and i do not want to spend more than 5,000 $ in total. I know that these two features are not really worth it considering the price, but i have a cheap P3 desktop and i want this laptop to last for 3-4 years and i want it to replace a desktop. So should i get the EE and the 2 GB ram?

I've seen some reports that suggest the EE and Prescott chips don't perform any better than the current Northwood in terms of gaming. I'd stick to 1 GB of RAM, at first. See how well all your apps, games, etc., perform before dropping a lot more $$ on extra RAM that might not give you enough bang for your buck. I'd also recommend buying the least amount of RAM in your original XPS configuration. You can get far better RAM prices from 4AllMemory, NewEgg, and other online vendors.

the EE's are the FASTEST cpus on the market even a 3.2 ghz model can run down any athlon 64 or a prescott cpu

the 3.4 northwood runs faster than the 3.2 EE, just something to keep in mind

In what application

Speaking for the gamers since there typically the largest market for this cpu i can imagine any other cpu beating a EE version of the pentium4. Cache makes a huge level of difference in performance.

I dunno, I saw a benchmark which compared them and the 3.4 outscored the EE on all of the benchmarked programs

and the benchmarked was all around, like it included encoding video, decoding mp3s it hink it was, games and everything. The 3.4 Northwood beat out the 3.2 EE

I think what I read is exactly the opposite of what you said. I am not sure, but I remember seeing two benchmarks at two respectable sites. The 3.4 EE beat every single other pentium chip in terms of gaming. It was always able to get better preformance and frame rates. However, in applications, the Prescott with 1 meg of L2 cache was able to beat all the other pentium chips including the 3.4 EE.

Sadly enough, the AMD had the best overall performance and price. It basically beat all the pentium chips in games and some programs.
