Resetting my motherboard serial?

I have 2 compaq R3000's. One is acting up and is 2 years old and it is having serious problems with the motherboard. The other works fine and is only 6 months old. My question to you is can I reset my serial number in the bios to my other R3000 so i can just send this in for repair to avoid the $500 charge for a new MB?

Thanks so much!
Mike

First off this is borderline illegal so you will probably not get an answer.

2nd - I would say NO, since any machine readable serial numbers would be burned into a ROM chip. Desoldering and resoldering those would probably kill BOTH motherboards, assuming you guessed correctly as to which one it is.

there is a way but you probably do not have the correct tools to do it. it envolves swapping components on the logic board. what is wrong with the other board? i may be able to help you out with that one instead. i work on these logic boards every day

It will freeze up while in windows after a few minutes and lines show up on the screen then I turn it off. when i power it back up i no longer have video. i have to let it sit for a while then the video works. i tried underclocking the vid card and still had the same issue.
