Just Got a P105-S9722

Just bought a P105-S9722 at CompUSA; they were doing there "Moonlight Madness" special from 6 to 10 PM tonight, offering 20% off any "unadvertised notebook". This allowed me to get the P105-S9722 for $1600, which was too good a price for me to pass up.

I haven't opened it yet though, still trying to decide whether I want to keep it (I am still a little nervous about some aspects of it, but I felt I had to jump on it since i'm not sure when I'd be able to get such a good price on this laptop any time soon otherwise).

Congrats... Fire it up and see what it can do...

Excellent deal

Thats a marvelous deal, i have just ordered mine from Amazon with a $150.00 rebate and a delivery of 10 days. I am still paying $1850. 00 though.
I am curious ,exactly what aspects of the laptop are you a little nervous about..?

Like sychnant, I'd also like to know what you're nervous about.

I also picked up the P105-S9722 from CompUSA Friday. I got there at five and there was only one left another guy there that had been waiting since 3 and they only had one in stock. So I had to talk the sales guy into giving up their display model, it had only been sitting out a that day though. (I was perusing their selction the day before looking for an alernative just in case they didnt have one in stock) I was extremely happy when I got it though. My only complaint was that when I got it home and booted it up I saw a couple of dead pixels (3). I called CompUSA the next day and they said they would replace the notebook when they get more in stock within 14 days, if they didnt get them in stock in time the sales guy said he would issue me a "coupon" to redeem for the notebook at later date at the same price. My mind wanders to the rumored Vista coupon also and its October arrival and if it's going to issued by the OEM companies or the retailers. (back from my tangent) I ran a few benchmarks to see what I could get out of it right out the box, and got 3778 in 3DMark06 (CPU Score:1702 - SM2 Score: 1461 - HDR/SM3 Score:1503), and 27s at 1MB in SuperPI (1m04s at 2MB). HDtune transfer rate (Minimum: 3.8MB/sec - Maximum: 35.9MB/sec - Average: 28.0MB/sec) Access Time of 20.1ms and Burt rate of 64.5MB/sec, CPU Usage was 7.6%. The hard drive itself is a Fujitsu MHV2200BT PL (200 GB) which runs rather cool at 36*C is extremely quiet, so i think it has the acoustic option enabled hampering performance a bit. The laptop overall is pretty responsive, and runs pretty cool. I dont think the processor fan has come on but maybe a couple of times, but the video card fan has been running non-stop. Granted you can barely hear it when it's running but when the fans start up they spin up fast and loud and back to quiet after a moment. I also had to adjust the mouse settings to get the button on the mouse pad that turns on the secondary function on, that was annoying at first until I adjusted the size of it (Synapitcs mouse by the way). Overall I really like it, the finish on the laptop is really nice and smooth. This thing is pretty thin and light condsidering its form factor and equipment packed inside its frame. I would definitely recommend it

Hey guys,

It would be great if any of you proud owners of this P105-S9722 machine, could post some hi-res pictures of this great notebook (Either in this thread or the Toshiba Photo Gallery section) . I am too curious to see how the Onyx metallic blue cover of this laptop looks like? Do post the pics guys..

1) The keyboard. I think I can get used to it, but the smaller keys on the right-hand side, specifically the smaller question mark and right-shift keys are something I'm still not totally sure about. 2) Toshiba Support. I am just sort of concerned because of some of the stories I've read from other people who have had to deal with Toshiba support when they've required any sort of repair service, etc. I'm hoping it isn't across the board, but some of these things have been serious enough that it at least gives me pause. I don't expect the laptop to be perfect..... what concerns me is if something does break or is defective, I'm really kind of worried about the kind of runaround I might get (one of the stories someone posted recently over on another forum described a huge headache involved in getting a problem fixed because of a problem with the power slot, and Toshiba wouldn't fix it because they said it must have been caused by human error rather than a product defect, and on top of that they were going to charge him another $500 just for the time to look at it). I'm assuming and hoping that there's more to the story in that case though. 3) Do I need it? This really doesn't have anything to do with the merits of the laptop itself, per se. It is more just an issue of whether or not I need a laptop like this. I do really love the idea of having such a powerful portable gaming machine (this thing is easily more powerful than the desktop computer I built for myself a while ago, which is a Socket 754 Athlon 64 3400+ system with 1.5 gigs of RAM and a GeForce 6800GT graphics card), but I am still not sure how unwieldy it is. I do like that it seems to be noticeably thinner and lighter than other 17" gaming laptops though. But I also do a lot of non-gaming stuff like word processing, etc. and I am wondering if this is a good laptop to use for both purposes.... I think it probably is, but it's just something I'm still debating. I still haven't opened it yet actually, as I haven't yet made up my mind about it. But I probably will keep it and use it, just need some more time to think about it.

there often is more to the story than what is told in cases like this. on any forum online you will likely hear alot of horror stories. this isnt because the product or support is that bad, rather its because those who feel they have been wronged in some way are far more vocal about it than those who have positive experiences.

it will work wonderfully for other multitasking things, word processing, video encoding, the works.

K, thanks. I think I am going to go ahead and keep it......... if ultimately it doesn't work out for me, I figure I can still always sell it and come out OK given the great price I got it at.

Do you recommend Toshiba's extended warranty at all? I thought the 3 year express warranty plus accident coverage looked pretty good.
yeah get a 3 year warranty. often if they dont break soon after purchase you will be computing for a couple years okay before you start to run into things, which makes a 3 year a good thing to have.
i am about to buy the 3year warranty from toshiba, which also includes accidental damage, if they cant fix it they will replace it. and its only 269.99. including the accidental damage, from toshiba, i bought it from circuitcity, and i am about to purchase it tommorrow, circuitcity charges up the a** for the 2year accidental warranty which is insanly 400 something dollars, i told them goodbye because i am going to get the 3year including accidental for 269.99. they notebook is beautifull, the blue top is nice and shiny, i was trying to flash the geforce 7900gs bios, but i guess toshiba has locked it, it said eeprom not match or something, or may the bios is only written for the dell laptops, just wondering anyone know of a workaround, people have been running the damn graphic card at insane speed without any problems whatsoever.

Would it even be safe to run the 7900gs at a higher speed?

What is the best process to go through to get a clean install of XP Pro on the machine? I went to the Toshiba site and they didn't seem to have downloadable drivers for most of the P105, other than the wireless drivers.

Also, another question for P100/P105 series owners; what sort of case do you use? I'm looking for a case that will also include good storage for the power adaptor, etc.

Which plan is that exactly you're getting? I saw that they had a 3 year SystemGuard + 3 year extended warranty plan for $314. I didn't see something like that for $269.99. EDIT: Never mind, found it: http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/...HO&coid=-29887 I'm wondering if ServiceExpress is worth it: http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/...HO&coid=-29885 The 3 year extended warranty with accident protection plus ServieExpress doesn't seem to cost all that much more. Would it be worth paying for?

I Actually I Just Purcahsed It Two Minutes Ago, 269.10, The Whole Process Took 2 Minutes, And Got A Conformation Email Right Away, Already Sings Of Great Service., Glad To See U Found It, I Dont Know Why Circuitcity Would Charge 449 Or Something For 2 Year Accidental Coverage. I Dont Think Its Worth Paying For The Service Express Plan, I Just Think Thats Onsite Service, And If They Cant Fix It Onsite Which Is The Case Most Of The Time, U Got No Other Choice But To Send It In, The Only Reason I Got It Is Because Of Accidental Coverage, Its Happened To Me Before, With My First Gateway Laptop, Well Worth The 269.10

I JUST PURCHASE A TARGUS CASE FROM CIRUITCITY, AROUND 60-70 BUCKS, IT FITS PERFECT WITH THE AC ADAPTER, I WOULDNT NORMALLY SPEND THAT MUCH THE CASE IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY AND SOLID CONSTRUCTION. I THINK IT IS SAFE TO RUN IT AT HIGHER SPEEDS, I JUST WANTED TO RUN IT AT 500/100, BECAUSE THE DAMN THING NEVER GETS HOT, AND PEOPLE IN DELL NOTEBOOKS HAVE IT CLOCKED TO 650/1250 SO CLOCKING IT TO THE SPEEDS I WANT IT ENTIRLY SAFE.

What case specifically was that? I saw that Targus had a couple of CityGear 17" messenger cases, but the only one I've found locally is the CityGear Miami, which is $50..... and specifically doesn't seem to include the detachable accessory bag like the higher-end CityGear case does. I've only checked CompUSA and BestBuy though, I might check CircuitCity to see what they have in stock.

Regarding why they charge so much, it's because the extended service plans are how these stories make most of their real profit. The margins even on computers are really pretty small, so it's really vital to them to get as many people as possible to buy their extended warranty.

CompUSA tried to sell me their 2 year TAP plan (which basically just covers 2 years of ownership) for $349.... the 3 year one was like $500. Just crazy. They tried to convince me it would be better than Toshiba's, and they actually lied about it. They told me that once something broke and was repaired under the Toshiba warranty, that was it..... but I read the Toshiba warranty and it said that it would provide coverage until repairs totalling the original value of the laptop were done, which seems reasonable enough.
About the Toshiba warranties... Yeah, at that price, the second one would be worth it... Absolutely.

It will get you out of paying for any damage caused by you... IE, dropping it, spilling liquids on the keyboard, etc. Especially worth it if you or someone you know that will be using it is very careless.

the case model numer is cpt400, i threw away all the tags and stuff, it did have a accessorie bag, the reason i like this case it becuase it is nice and simle, and u really dont have to take the laptop out of the case to use it if there is enough room to work with ofcourse, just unzip the top and opem up the laptop, i used to have the same kind in college was very easy to work with on a desk in the library or wherever.
the case also has the cd holders u can put around 6 or may be more cd's there and lots of pockets.
