Just Got a P105-S9722 - Page 2

Well, I decided to keep the P105, and have been playing around with it today.

Definitely a pretty amazing machine. Got 6234 in 3DMark05. and 3826 in 3DMark06.

Screen is beautiful. I was really dismayed when I first booted up because there was a big bright green stuck pixel near the center of the display. However, i decided to try the advice to massage it a bit, and amazingly enough, it disappeared after about 5 seconds of massaging. So I'm definitely happy about that.

I do have to admit, the heat this thing generates is certainly noticeable. The bottom does get incredibly hot, and even the top left side of the keyboard gets warm enough to be noticeable. Although again, given the power thing this has, it isn't surprising.

The fans seem to be pretty quiet though..... I guess that's a good thing, but I wouldn't mind louder fans if it meant cooler operation.

I downloaded rivatuner and according to that, while just working normally, the GPU's temp is about 59 degrees C and the ambient temp is 55 degrees C. not sure what it is yet for intensive gameplaying.

But this is definitely a nice machine, and I feel pretty comfortable with the purchase decision.

Are there any good utilities that can be downloaded for monitoring temp, controlling fans, etc.?

I agree, when I first ran the laptop the first few days it was extremely hot in that one spot. After a few days it seemed to cool down significantly and only got warm again after playing Oblivion for an hour or so. I'm pretty sure that it's just breaking the thermal goop in. I noticed that if you have a few stuck pixels you probably have the LG Philips screen. When I exchanged the laptop yesterday and ran some diagnostics the laptop was just as hot again but the laptop had a Samsung screen. The LG if you go through refresh rates anything 1280 resolution and below showed that you could run it at many different rates including 59hz through 100Hz, and the screen was sharper and had more of an "HD" effect similiar to Mac screens. The Samsung however is noticably brighter (mine is about 10-15% brighter) and also runs 1280 and below at 60hz-100hz. It also had no dead pixels to stare at! I would prefer the LG screen though, it looked alot nicer. I couldnt make the dead pixels disappear on mine though

Same here, the heat issue on the left worried me, but then it also started to cool down. It's with me at work and I can't barely feel the heat dissipation from the top left of the keyboard anymore. It does warm up a bit when I'm playing Scarface, and I can't wait to continue my web dev and multimedia projects on this machine. Definitely a step up from a P4 Prescott that always heats up my room like a furnace! I have the LG screen, but I don't favor the small glow from within the bottom of the screen. Can anyone else see this small glow?

That makes sense, I've heard other P105 owners talk about that "burn in" period.

I don't have any complaints about the screen, really. Aside from that stuck pixel, but I'm still amazed it became "unstuck" with only a few seconds of massaging.

The screen is incredibly bright and vibrant - actually, it's almost too bright; I found it more comfortable to use when setting it at 1 or 2 points down.

Actually, one thing I have noticed is that there does seem to be a fair amount of light leakage at the bottom of the screen, but it's only noticeable when the screen is all black. I'm not sure if that should be a problem or not (or even if it is, if light leaker is enough reason to return something). I'd probably say I don't want to push my luck, as for almost everything I've used it for so far the screen has been great.

Yeah, I have the same thing.... I think that's basically what they refer to as light leakage. So far I can't say it bothers me a whole lot since I only notice when the screen goes to full black.

Just curious, do any of you ever use any sort of laptop pad/etc. to use the P100/P105 in your lap? I have been looking for something like that, since it would be nice to use on the couch, in bed, etc.

One thing I was thinking of was the Rain Design iLap:

http://www.raindesigninc.com/ilap.html

They designed these more for the PowerBooks and MacBook Pros, but they also make them for any 17" notebook. What I like especially about them is that they can also be used on a desk, and includes a nice velvet cushion to use while using it on your lap.

I've been waiting and searching for months for a powerful laptop with great features and specs, but I guess the leakage disappoints me when I compare it to laptop (HP dv8000t). I've greatly considered the HP 9000t over a dozen of times, but don't think I would enjoy beeping buttons and muffled speakers when the lid is closed. Other than the leakage, I'm happy with my purchase, but would be much happier if I picked it up for the price you got it for. I guess I can't complain much since I have a 6 months pay-as-cash plan for it.

Both screens I seen had some leakage out of the bottom, and like you I was also considering the HP. I liked the screen and hard drive options, but a 7600 go was as high as the graphics went and I wanted something more powerful than the x600 in my Gateway. After like a month of going back and forth between the Toshiba's predecessor and HP the P105-9772 came out and a week later CompUSA had the 20% off special. That made the decision easy for me, and I was thrilled to even get the display model, I exchanged it yesterday so now I feel an additional layer of confidence in this machine. This laptop absolutely kills my Gateway.

I ordered mine from costco website and am waiting for it. It should arrive by halloween. The bad thing is that I have bf2142 and Dark Messiah this week, so I will not beable to play it.

Everything looks good about the laptop except I would prefer the sxga screen instead of the xga. I can replace the harddrive.

The only reason I got this one is because of the six month return policy. Otherwise I would go buy a sager that gives you sxga/uxga and a 7900gtx card.

I just can't see the reason to buy a 3000$ computer from DELL.

Should I swap out the harddrive right away because its only 4200rpm SATA?

Honestly, I would try the hard drive out and see if it really bothers you. Others have pointed out that for a 4200rpm drive, the read/write access times aren't that bad. I heard someone say that this is partially thanks to the new perpendicular recording technology, and just how tightly packed the data is.

Personally at least the hard drive hasn't seemed too slow to me.

The hard drive performance isn't that bad. I've been able to itunes while playing a game, alt-tab to firefox and to adobe photoshop and flash. Also, the harddrive is the largest for being 2.5".

The question isn't if it will run ok.

The question is will a 5400 or 7200 rpm SATA run significantly better justifying purchasing and replacing the drive that it comes with.

Thats the question.

I've got the 9712 (different cpu) and can say as soon as a 200GB+ 7200rpm drive is out I'm getting it; I can tell the difference on some aps from my old laptop that had a 7200rpm even though this one has a faster cpu and more memory.
Any of you tried BF2 or Oblivion on that machine? If you have how does it perform?
I'm starting to feel the torture of the 4200rpm drive within photoshop and flash. chadlittle, i'll be on that deal when it comes out also, and i'll convert the 200-4200 into an external file storage drive.

Please help.

Where are the drivers for the p105-s9722 Toshiba notebook?

I looked on this site and there is nothing specific to this notebook. I am concerned because the support doesn't look for good so far. Maybe I'll take it back and go with a sager.

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/t...ceghdgngdgnj.0

Also, the notebook plays any games at ultra high settings but I am noticing the graphics seem to not be 100%.
Is it possible they tweeked the card to play high settings but force the graphic details to not be 100%.

Please explain both my concerns?

I think you would see a significant change from the 4200 to the 5400 and less from the 5400 to the 7200.
It would be entirely up to you if the cost of the 7200 vs the 5400 is justified for the slight difference

What is the best process to go through to get a clean install of XP Pro on the machine? I went to the Toshiba site and they didn't seem to have downloadable drivers for most of the P105, other than the wireless drivers.

Also, another question for P100/P105 series owners; what sort of case do you use? I'm looking for a case that will also include good storage for the power adaptor, etc.

Anyone wanting to know how I have my 9722 running a clean install of XP w/all drivers installed and booting w/only 22 processes, feel free to message me. I have all needed drivers isolated to two folders.

The 'burn in' people talk about is limited. You are not going to see a tremendous difference in temperature. You have to understand that this machine is essentially a destkop with a 17" LCD. It is going to generate a ton of heat, but it is built to do just that.

When your GPU starts hitting the 80's (*C), then you can get worried. After extended periods of gaming I generally run at around 60-75*C at the most, and by extended I mean a few hours. This is with it being relatively warm in my apartment due to the heat being on.

When my warranty runs out I fully intend to crack this thing open and replace all the thermal goop with Arctic Silver.

I bought one from Best Buy also.they were blowing them out at $1299 because Vista was not installed on them. It performs really well and lives up to all the reviews. Good Luck with it.
