XP Pro Upgrade - Page 2

If you want all of the bundled software, do a real upgrade

1) restore your system back to the way it was
2) put in the windows xp pro cd and this time choose "Upgrade existing OS" and don't blow away the partitions

This is what I did, and now I am running XP pro but with my bundled software. You may need to get the AGP drivers as stated above, but it's not that difficult. If you have problems, you can always re-restore, so there is little risk.

oh well, i guess i have to upgrade

in general upgrading from home to pro is not going to be as clean as a fresh install.. which i think is why most of us do the clean install. It does suck that you lose money.. norton should be taken off and replaced with avg free anyway.. much much kinder on the system.. powerdvd.. well there are free programs out there for dvd playback.

yeah, i want to clean install, which i have already done. i don't care about powerDVd or the Norton (its a trial anyways), i just need the CD/DVD burner software.

i just called Emachine Tech support: they keep telling me to use disk 3 or something like that, i told them it came with only one DVD restore disk. They don't have any clue that it comes w/ DVD disk. They ended up telling me they will not support XP Pro, will only support Home Ed.

i wonder if i can use the DVD burner software that came with my company's compaq presario?

My 6809 came with a drivers folder on c:, I've got them backed up in a rar archive online here . File is about 45Mb

Just picked up an M6805 and I got couple of questions for the XP Pro crew:

1.) Volume contro and "applications" buttons do not work in XP Pro for me. Can anyone comment on whether they require special drivers or if they're supposed to work? To be honest I didn't bother booting the laptop into WinXP Home, so I don't even know if they worked out of the box.

2.)EDIT: Apparently the mouse is bad... of the 3 computers in the household only one recognizes it.

I plug in my Gateway mouse (Logitech?) mouse and it works fine. The volume control also seems to work ok. If I open the volume app, and run the buttons, you can see it move. THe app button opened OUtlook Express on my machine.

Turns out mouse may be bad. So much for that.

Back to the media/app buttons: Is there a driver needed to enable them or did they work right off the bat? I can't see the volume knob move when I use the buttons and none of the launcher buttons work for me.

I've restored XP Home and verified that they worked with factory software. Getting XP Pro back on, but what am I missing.

EDIT: The plot thickens. It appears as if XP SP2 build 2113 may have been responsible for rendering media buttons inoperable. On the second install of XP Pro, I didn't install SP2 and the buttons seem to work. I'm going to ghost the drive and proceed installing SP2 from this point on.

I didn't specifically install anything to "make" them work. They just seemed to work. I haven't installed SP2, and from the sounds of it, won't be anytime soon.

just wanted to say THANKS for the post! It gave me the additional "cojones" to try to install xp pro. Everything is working great now!

Now I just have to figure out why I can't seem to network with my desktop. Have the broadband but can't see the other computer.

So I'm still having issues with CPU speeds behaving correctly in XP Pro.

I have the "AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Driver for Windows XP, Version 1.1.0.14" installed and the machine occasionally comes up at 800Mhz when on AC power and occasionally doesn't throttle correctly when going on/off AC.

Is anyone having similar issues with this driver? Has anyone installed the PowerNow! set of utilities and can comment on how whether they behave better? At this point I'm not concerned with overclocking and I do want the CPU to go down to 800Mhz when on battery.
