High Pitch HD Whine

Hi,
I just purchased a DV6174cl from Costco. It is a beautiful laptop and I am just getting aquainted with it. While all is good so far, I have noticed that for the first few minutes of use, the HD (or I think the HD) emits a high pitched whine while not spinning. This is not a loud sound but, for me at least, it is high enough to be annoying to the point where I may need to take it back if I can't stand it. It seems to come from the fron right corner of the laptop.

Is this common? Can this be cured?

Other than this, the laptop seems to be fine. I did notice that the fingerprint finish shows lots of fingerprints - maybe that is why it is named so

If anyone has advice about the sound or anything else on this laptop, I'd love to hear from you.

Don't have a dv6xxx, but a high pitched whine while not spinning doesn't sound normal to me... (and would drive my 5lb hammer crazy...)

I'd swing by Costco and see if the displays are doing the same thing.

You sure a dvd/cd isn't in the dvd drive? Leave it open and check.

No CD.

I'll swing by Costco to see if I can hear anything from that computer.

After using it laptop for most of the day, the sound has either diminished or I am used to it now. At any rate, it will be interesting to see if I can hear it again tomorrow after I don't use the laptop for a while.

Checked out a thread at nbr and a lot of people are having the same issue. Apparantly it is "common with Core 2 Duo" procs....
There was a suggestion to try the the following:
RMClock program @ http://cpu.rightmark.org/products/rmclock.shtml

Make sure to check "Run HLT Command when OS is idle (restart required)" under the "Managment" file

I did it, and it immediately got rid of the whine....amazing.
