update on the nw9400 Core Duo 2

Well... for some reason the system performance is horrible.

While watching dvd movies... the system keeps pausing the video every 3-5 seconds.
Put FEAR in and it does the same thing... the game constantly pauses everytime I turn a corner or open a door.

I'm wondering if it is some background app that is causing this. But watching task manager doesn't show anything.

CPU Performance however is very erratic when watching it in Task Manager.
Playing a dvd movie causes the CPU usage to reach up to 40%... seems awfully high for just a movie.

As of right now... the laptop's performance is not too great.

On 3DMark06, I get a score of 4056. I can't tell if that's good or not.

1: Please post your systems specs and the "real" model number (Internal HP model number)

2: (On that 3DMark06, score of 4056..... hard to say without knowing the specs of your unit. Which GPU, etc is being talked about)

3: One thought on the poor performance:
Go into your power management, make sure the correct options are selected.... CPU, etc will throttle back, etc while on battery power. I've read posts before of people who were on A/C power, but for some reason the settings didn't take. You may need to reset the settings.

BTW: When you get a chance, post some benchmarks of your system here , along with the specs:

The specs were in another thread? That doesn't help someone help you unless they've seen that thread. Nvidia Quadro 1500M should be along the same lines as a Dell 1705 with a Nivdia 7900GS I think... PS: Thanks for posting your specs. It does help others help you, and makes the thread more useful to others. Kudos (thumbs up) for posting the specs in the BODY of any such post instead of in your "sig" like allot of people do as allot of search engines don't "see" "sigs", the "sigs" are sometimes stripped out on some boards when threads are archived.... Another reason instead of posting such info in a "sig" is to "tie" the fixes to a certain model /problem and when someone buys a new computer and changes their sig which changes the sigs in ALL their posts to the "new" info which really degrades info, tips given since the model number, etc no longer match up. Not posting such info is like asking for tech advice, or say a waterpump for a "car", only stating the mfg...

I suggest calling HP and asking if the problem is familiar to them and if they know how to fix it. The DVD problem would seem the easiest one to start with. One idea of the business line is that you don't need to figure out what's the problem, but the technical support does it for you, so you can utilize that now.

Well.. just an update:

1.) DVD playback problems seem to be caused by the fact that Intervideo's WinDVD player 5 that came with my system does not work properly with Core Duo 2 cpus. 1 processor gets pegged at 40% when using Intervideo.... thus causing some choppy playback at fullscreen. (Media Player only used 4% CPU when doing dvd playbacks).

2.) The processor is actually underclocked to 1995MHz... (anyone know how I can increase this?)

3.) Apparently I've run into a problem when playing Battlefield 2142. The game will suddenly drop down to a minimized application on my taskbar right in the middle of the game. I think this has something to do with an incompatibility with the Core Duo 2 processor.

4.) Tried to install Flight Simulator X, but kept locking up my computer as soon as it tried to access the dvd. After calling MS Support, it appears the the Sonic CD/DVD recorder program that came with HP has to be uninstalled/removed. Once I uninstalled all the Sonic DVD recording software, Flight Sim X works fine.

5.) It appears that HP did NOT update any of its drivers or software for the new Intel Core Duo 2 processor and chipset.

In summary.... I have a feeling that my performance is being decreased due to having a Intel Core Duo 2 processor. Everything I run seems to bog down only one processor, while the other processor is barely used.
I think Intel needs to come our with some chipset drivers that allow applications to take advantage of a dual core.

Well, I just read that Hp has overtaken Dell in PC sales worldwide...
Are they so busy with selling computers that they can't find the time for testing their notebook?
- You buy a mobile workstation representing the best that Hp can do, and you pay for it
- You get a beautiful notebook with tons of issues to be fixed

I've ordered a nw9440 too, and I could not wait to put my hands on it before reading this post...

Anyway, have you tested some professional software (CATIA V5.xx, proE, 3DSmax...) so far? In other words, apart from the processor trouble, is the graphic card doing its damn work?

Unfortunately I don't have any 3D professional software that is current, so I couldn't post an accurate performance benchmark.

The only thing I use is construction toolsets or mod tools for games, and any supporting 3D programs (like Maya Personal Learning Edition).

Nonetheless.... I haven't figured out what good a dual core processor is if the 2nd core never gets used.

.

vampyr,

You can download FREE versions of

3Dmark05, 3DMark06

Another benckmark people use is
Super PI which tests the CPU.

Here's a thread with references to the various programs.
