Neighbours computer problems.

My neighbor just got a "new" computer used from a co-worker of his. Its a 1.2GHZ celeron with 256mb of RAM with Windows 98. Durring the windows startup he gets a fatal exception 0E at 0028:C0014FD0. I can boot into safe mode and everything works fine. Any ideas what this could be? I was thinking memory error but I took out the RAM and replaced it with RAM I know to be good and recieved the same error. Could it be a bad motherboard? Or at least maybe the slot? I'm trying to get a copy of the bootlog.txt right now.

(I'm being serious here) The problem is Windows 98.. That thing was AWFUL...
might want to try to get as up to date drivers as you can, but I'd personally rather buy an actually new computer with XP rather than deal with that thing..

He doesnt want to spend money. This is a huge upgrade for him. His old PC has a Pentium Pro and 16mb of RAM.

jesus.....my school as a Pentium 1 ...thats about the oldest I've been on

A Pentium Pro?? I'd sell that, they're still worth quite a bit of money..
then use the proceeds to buy a real system

The best he can hope for is a fresh install with the latest drivers you can find and keep the number of other programs minimal. The lighter you can keep 98 the less it'll crash, but it's still gonna crash annoyingly often..
I so don't miss that OS (or Me)

Dont talk till you've been on a 286

I'll try replacing the drivers for him when I'm over there next. But my 98 installs are usually stable. Now ME on the other hand....dont get me started *flashback* NOOOOO NOT AGAIN!!!!

Ugh....some people have flashbacks to Vietnam or Desert Storm....I have flashbacks to the horrors of ME.....

98 SE did seem a little more stable, but they were both awful compared to XP.. Is a reformat/fresh install of 98 an option for them? That would get rid of everything they might've collected over the years. BTW, have they ever reformatted??

Heres the "great" part, it IS a fresh install. No bloatware spyware or any programs. Just windows 98 and whatever comes with it and some basic drivers. I'm trying to find one of my older windows disks right now so I can reformat and see if that helps it.

try a clean boot, go into safe mode, run msconfig, turn everything off, reboot into normal mode, if you still get that error try these few google links

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=188867

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281965

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=192926

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx

if not, do you hear any noises at all? hard drive sounding odd? who did the reinstall and did they know what they were doing? and did the drivers go through?

whomever loaded the drivers may have loaded an xp driver *shrugs*

hope those links help a wee bit

and dman, do you program? do you code? you realize it isnt an overnight process to make an operating system? why knock it when the only problem I HAD was bsod's thats all.....and xp i've never had a bsod with at all, ever, so i liked win98, i perfer xp home tho

what im getting at, is being bias'ed doesnt help people out but yourself, your opinion isnt needed here, just your help, why spit crap and treadjack with how ___________ sucks?

whatever

if the OP feels that way then that's cool, but I don't need anything like that from someone posting in a thread, especially when that point has never been made in the over two years I've been a member here..

Not to mention I'm sure I'm not the only one that couldn't stand 98 and Me. XP is a huge improvement, but it also was built off of NT...

sorry about that rant earlier, but that was a bit annoying...

I always had better luck with SE, do you happen to have that? or just regular 98??
I also think that MS no longer supports 98, so I don't know if you'll be able to get ahold of the who knows how many updates they put out for it. Do you happen to have NT or 2000?? both of those would be a much better OS.
and what about trying XP? I'm sure it won't buzz along in it, but at least it'll be slow but stable...

the fact is, your opinion on a piece of software is NOT helping the OP, weather he knows about the flaws of 98 or not, you have no helped him thus far with your "rant"

i havent had a abnormaly big problem with any OS ive used, some annoying, but you tend to get over it

but whatever

TBOT: i hope you get it fixed with someones help here OP, let us know whats up

Sorry, I havent had a chance to get back over there yet. I was thinking use 2000, but that disk is.....somewhere heh heh I'll find it eventually. I would use an XP disk but the only one I have is the retail one that came with my laptop, it wont work on his.

The PC seems like its perfectly fine. No strange noices, everythings working. I was thinking about slapping Ubuntu on there and seeing what happens with that. Probably it'll work right away.

good idea, that'll at least get rid of the possibility of a hardware problem
post #15 of 17
I have no productive input, but I'd honestly be amazed if XP worked due to hardware requirements.

XP will work, I have installed and ran XP (quite smoothly) on less.

celerons...are shit. it's simple, put he could probably run xp on it though, i ran xp on a 600mhz celeron processor, with 512 gb of ram, if you look at the initial xp requirements when it was released it didn't require as much as you would think, although there will be a big jump with vista....also why 98 though, i think u could find a copy of NT, or 2000, just as easily 2000 especially as it would have actually PnP support as oppose to 98's attempt
