Hey!

I want to put opensuse linux on my laptop, but i need to know will the wireless card work with this driver? http://www.intel.com/support/notebook/sb/cs-006408.htm it says Linux. But which one?

I dont want ubuntu or fedora,it must be mandriva or opensuse linux.

If it works on one distribution of linux it can work on any distribution of linux, just the amount of work may vary. Typically with Suse this will be a larger amount of work than say with Ubuntu as you have to deal with their way of doing things.

i still don't get why you're so deathly afraid of ubuntu (if you don't like dapper, edgy is out in like 2 or 3 weeks), but between mandrake and suse, i say go mandrake. Every time i tried suse (you can find write-ups on this forum) it has been nothing but a pain in my royal assh*le. I honestly gave suse multiple chances (9.1 home, 9.1pro, 9.2, 10.0, 10.1) and it just pushed me over the edge. I guess if it works for you, it will work. At least I had a greater success (and enjoyment of using) rate with Mandrake (10 and 2005).

and like seablade said...if it works with one, with some hacking possibly, it will work with all of them.

i tried ubuntu but i could never get my wireless card to work. I have installed opensuse on my desktop... It was a easy installation, not like ubuntu 5 hours then would not boot!!! I like the KDE layout,i really like it. I am going to build my own computer and i wont be using windows! Also how can i install programs i cant figure out how?

Thanks,

installation of software really varies distro to distro and what package managers they use, or if you're installing from source.

on how to use package managers in each unique distro see it's WIKI pages

If your inspiron comes with an Intel 2200BG or the newer 2915BG, then you'll need the firmware found on the SUSE Add-on cd (also downloadable from opensuse.org). If you have the Dell Broadcom wireless, I believe you'll have to run ndiswrapper.

Just so happens my 10.1 M70 has a 2200BG and my wife's D600 has the Dell 1350... so I can probably help out if you get stuck. One thing on the 1350... my wife's computer won't boot up on battery... I haven't looked into it though. Works fine if plugged in (and yes it appears to be related to the ndiswrapper).

Thank You,

I have the 2200BG, i also have been reading that there is a bit of a problem when closing the lid.

Do you know anything about that?

just make sure that your kernel is compiled with all the proper moduels (suspend2 patch anyone?) and your acpi events are properly configured (suspend2disk on lid close) and as long as you don't have an ati card using fglrx (you dont right?) you should be just fine and dandy.
