huge sager 4750 design flaw!!!causing it to smoke!!!

heres one for you all....

well i have a sager 4750 which is exactly 2 weeks out of warrenty.
about a week ago the screen started to go white when i opened it past a certain point. Since i need this computer for school (architecture grad student, i use it every day.) i deciced to wait for a whille untill i got thanksgiving break to fix it.

Today i got a wonderful suprise,

I openend the screen, only to find the machine constantly restarting, with a conserable amount of smoke comming from the screen. I quickly turned it off, and decided to open the screen (it was already out of warrenty, what the hell) What i found suprised me.

the bundle of cables which runs from the machine to the screen had a hole in the metal tape which protects it around the hinge. THe wires which ran to the mic were not connected to the bundle,( the mic never worked!!!!) and there was a burn mark around the area where the mic should have connected. The wires around this area where completly melted, and the wires around it were touching, causing a short.

The design flaw is, that the way the cables are put in, it gets pinched around the case for the lcd. After opening it (about 200 times) the wires completly worn out, and shorted, causing the problem. I am so angry about this, i wish i could get a complete refund!!!!!!!! It is obvious that the wires were pinched during instilation, and that there is not enough room in the design for them to move freely when the case is opened. This is obvisly a problem which occoured long before i ever bought this laptop. http://www.notebookforums.com/images.../angryfire.gif

Called sager support when the problem first happened, and u can guess what response i got.

BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i am never buying a laptop from a small company like this again!!!

I'm at 2 rma's. One for a dead video card and another for bad ram.

4750 isn't low maintenance

I am typing this on mine, I love the machine though. I had some issues with my wireless (I think somewhere along the line the antena wire got yanked inside) and the ATI video cards stank, so thankfully all the new machines seem to offer the nVidia. Otherwise the AMD chips in here are favs of mine, especially since on this noiser older Sagers the fans can get pretty loud. With the AMD I can use Crystal CPUID to manually crank down the speed and voltage for normal use and really quiet it down.

I just bought a 9750 recently, since this one is getting a little tired for the quantity of work I demand from it. It is a super workhorse for recording digital audio, rendering 3d, and editing video. The CPU fan is starting to expire on it as well, but that should be a relatively easy fix. The main limitation these days though is that it only can support one harddrive, which gets a bit cramped when recording multitrack audio or rendering.

That being said, these earlier Sager cases are a bit fragile compared to the new bodies - expect problems with parts breaking down overtime. You can macgyver them together for quite a while though. The screen stays flawless.

Also keep in mind, these problems aren't exclusive to Sager. Go read the Dell forums sometime - its the nature of laptops sadly. The most reliable laptop is two laptops.

You have the patience of a God. Personally, I probably wouldn't flown back to the US and screamed in person if I were up to 5.
