dell compblty w/ direct10x rumors-READ-

I plan on getting Vista. Im looking into a 9400 or 1705. When Vsita comes out with direct10x, will it be just as easy as ripping out my old vid card (1400x) and just buying a vid card thats d10x compatible??? There are rumors that directx10 vid cards wont be compaitible with current processors, cpu's, motherboards and power supplies. Any ideas/suggestions would be of help, thank you

No body here knows but it is highly unlikely that Dell will offer a DX10 card for these systems. These systems will likely be replaced before a Mobile DX10 card makes it to market.

You're being too hopeful.

It is highly likely that those romors are correct, so chances are overwhelming that you will not be able to upgrade to a DX10 graphics card.

Beyond that, however, it is not clear what your issue is. You will still be able to run Vista perfectly fine on DX9 hardware, you will continue to be able to run all current games, and you will also be able to run upcoming DX10 games, when they come out, albeit at reduced performance compared to a native DX10 card. However, there is nothing at all new about that situation: At some point, our hardware will not be able to run the newest games at maximum settings, simply because such games will be designed for future hardware.

The power requirements for DX10 will be 2-3 x present DX9, I expect a new MB design to support them, along with bigger power bricks.

I think that this is an entirely unsubstantiated rumor. We should also hope that it is nothing but a rumor. If it were true, it would pretty much simply rule out laptop DX10 cards in the near-term future, period. The point to understand here is that the additional power for those cards would have to be dissipated as heat, and there is simply no way current laptop designs would support an additional 200 Watts of heat flux. Well, unless you want to put up with jet-engine like noise levels from the fan(s)...

In any case, accommodating that kind of heat cannot be done by a simple "redesign of the motherboard"; in fact, the motherboard would be the absolute least of the worries one would have to deal with.

It's not an unsubstantiated rumor anymore. 8800s will require 2-2.5x the power of their 79xx counterparts. I'm sure some dickery could be done in the "mobile chip" department, but sufficed to say this thing's going to be hot as Hell any way you slice it.

Also, FORGET notebook SLI with 8800s, too.

The 8800 GTX will consume more power than the 7900 GTX, as did the 7800 over the 6800.
Once the 8900 series comes out with a die shrink the power used will become much more reasonable (as with the 7900 over the 7800)
The 8800 series will probably be suited to XPS's and Sager's with huge AC-Adaptors and little to no battery life.

Hopefully the 8900 GTS (new name for GS) will fit snuggly into the i9400 with not too many mods and use way less power then then 8800 parts.

Just buy the laptop, refinance your house and get the external nvidia quadro box for $18k.

I think it's safe to say that it is not very likley we will see a DX 10 card upgrade for present laptops, thus mpre likely we will see a new Model released with DX10.
