Laptop cooler seems to work for my 4780

I had originally bought this cooler when I ordered a Fujitsu n5010, http://www.x-tremegeek.com/templates...sp?T1=148+0752 but I had to send back the n5010 because of a dead pixel so I now use it for my new 4780. There is another review of the cooler by someone else in this forum and thats how I first found it. The cooler with the fans turned on did reduce the heat on the left palm side but it made a really annoying vibration so I rarely turned the fans on, that is until I modded it somewhat. I cut out some styrofoam padding about 6" in length,1" in width, and taped them on the bottom of each end. This worked rather well and the vibration was eliminated. It also had another benefit. By raising the rear of the cooler about 1", it created more circulation for the cooler's fans.

Now I don't have an internal thermometer so I can't tell if the temperature actually went down or not but what I do notice is that the left palm rest and left side of the keyboard are noticeably cooler and the fans on my 4780 don't turn on as often and when they do, the don't run as long.

I probably paid too much for it because I saw similar products for much less, but it does also act as a usb hub and all in all, the cooler does an adequate job.

I really like that cooler.
If you want to monitor your temps download this program IT WORKS http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconVa...310/mm0310.zip

Requires ACPI drivers to work. Does not work for my old Sager.

That temp program works great, but the news that I'm getting is not so good. I'm finding that my 4780 gets as hot as 60 C. The cooler, is helping to some degree. With the fans on, it takes approx. 3 minutes for the temp to go from 50 to 60 and about 45 seconds to drop from 60 to 50 working in tandem with the notebook fan. Without the cooler fan on, it took approx. 2 minutes to get from 50 to 60 and 55 seconds to cool to 50. I'm not sure how long this notebook is going to last at those temps. I might have to send this back if I dont find a solution to how to keep this baby cool.

Ok this might be a total noob question, but im seeing you guys worried about the temps of the internals in a laptop. On my desktop my AMD Thunderbird overheats a lot...I have to have the case open with a fan on it (I know I can get more case fans, but im in a small town and im lazy.) Without the fan on it will sometimes overheat and the cpu will reboot the comp.

Is overheating in a laptop a major concern? All reports show that these lappys run hot, but normal hot temps on them arent damaging are they? And if the cpu gets too hot, wont the cpu temp failsafe just reboot the comp?

I've never owned a laptop, and want to buy a 8790...but if I have to worry about compnents actually frying, do I want to make the investment?

They wouldnt put out a comp if it was gonna overheat all the time right?

Wait for a few of us to actually receive units and test them as you appear to be "on the fench" at the present time.

Im just curious about the temps on laptops in general....not specifically the 8790. Ive just seen other posts where ppl are trying to get their laptop temps down...other than burning a leg, is heat a problem in desktop replacement laptops?

My Pentium 4 2.6 on my desktop runs at 60 C all day long with case open. At first I thought it was gonna fry but I sometimes leave desktop on for like a month downloading stuff at that temperature and it has never rebooted. Then again it always stops at 60 or 61 C never higher.

Newere Pentiums might run even hotter. So much for the good old days of Pentium 3's running at 40 C.

I hope the 5680 im hoping to buy doesnt fry as well lol.

I average 55C on my 4780 and the fan kicks in at 60 and is on for less than a minute.

Well, I'm not sure if mine has an average, it goes from 50 to 60 then back to 50 when the fan kicks in. After doing some more research, I decided to put in an order for the nexus heat pipe cooler. If that works better, then I'll ebay the one I'm currently using. If it doesnt, I might have to RMA this baby and that would be a shame because other than the heat and the fan noise, this baby rocks.

I was mainly refering to how long the temp stays, it stays at 55 for the longest time, as on the chart on that temp monitoring program.

My temps are the exact same, the fan kicks in at 60 and turns off at 50.

my 4760 gets that same types of temps...55-60...i think within the next week i am gonna arctic silkver it up and see if that helps any.

I sit at about 45 idol and around 60 when gaming on my 5680

Most CPU's have a warning at like 80 and a shutdown at 85 so running at 60 is not really that hot. You gotta keep in mind that these babies tend to heat up ... so fire in short controlled bursts ... sorry. You have to keep in mind that they are desktop chips and as such were meant to have a lot of air around them and if possible extra cooling. 60 For such a small form factor is no big deal
