Reformat with external CD drive on M6809?

I asked this question in general forums but I think you guys would know the answer.

Can I reformat my new hard drive on my M6809 using an external CD-Rom drive? My CD/DVD drive is busted and does not recognize the windows XP disc.

Someone at the other forum mentioned that it is possible if the notebook's bios can support it. Has anyone tried this before on the M6809 or knows the if it's possible?

Thanks,
Michael

I just talked to eMachines tech support. They say it's possible to boot from external CD drive. This is what they said to do:

1) You just have to change the Boot device priority in your BIOS
2) In order to get in your BIOS you have to repeatedly tap the F2 while the computer is restarting
3) Boot Menu, you should see there Boot Device Priority. Or if you do not see a Boot Device Priority, Try to see, Boot Summary Screen in Advanced Menu.
4) Make your first Boot Device your External drive: which is Removable E: then As your 2nd boot Device make CD-ROM drive then 3rd is your Hard drive.
5) Once you have changed it press the F10 key to exit and save the changes made.

Not sure if this will work but I'll try it later tonight or tomorrow.

The bios doesn't support USB boot. I think the bios "supposedly" supports a PXE boot option, which would be over a LAN. You'd have to do some digging on that, but when it's set, the laptop will send a DHCP request looking for a server with an O.S. boot image, basically. Good advice would be to spend the 50 or so bucks and replace your cd-rom drive, whatever installation you decide on. CD and hard drive are practically the only hardware boot options on these laptops.
good luck-

It will not boot from an external optical drive. It will boot from an external floppy though.

Well that's handy to know. Weird, isn't it?

Dear Hendlefe,

I was just wondering did you try booting from USB cd drive? I am having same problem and wish to format and reisntall windows via USB CD drive.

Even the dell support guy suggested it is possible selecting 'Boot thro usb' option in boot priority in bios.

But after reading the replies in this thread I doubt it will work!

Any comments guys?

Thank You

The dell support guy is talking about a dell. Their bioses are alot more tweakable than these. I saw in another thread a guy said you could also boot these emachines off a Secure Disk, I think. It was some flash port you wouldn't normally expect.
