Adam, a few questions...

I plan on (hopefully) buying an 8790 for school. I know it is ill suited for the task, but I am addicted to raw power. Before I purchase though, you need to set my mind at ease. Did Clevo stick with the cheap half sized heatsink or did they go back to the old 4760 design? Also, with the 12 cell battery, how long do you think I could word process before it conks out. Last question, I promise. How big is the power supply (dimesions?).

Thats something ive been wondering myself, out of curiosity, how exactly do they power a prescott and its 103 watts of power hogging in there, the standard, bulky PSUs only put out 120 and those are the biggest ive seen.
Not a problem, there are PSUs out there with up to 180 watts, probably more. And its really no big deal to design a bigger one. Its one of the easiest things to design and just as easy to build.

The 4760 never had that long heatsink, in the picture of the 4760 was a demo test model thing. Im sure it will have adiquite cooling though, as for the power supply demintions and stuff im sure adam cannot answer those becouse he doesnt have a 8790 none of us do (yet) becouse those pics were direct from sager as i have heard.

I dont know the answer, but they MUST have done something about the 8790 heatsink. People were complaining about the 4780's heat. I cannot imagine what kind of temperatures the 8790 would reach if built under the same heatsink structure.
The 4780 never had any overheating problems. I personally used one as my main gaming machine and when I say game I mean 15 hour sessions =). The thing with the 4780 is how it was engineered in that more heat is felt on the left side palm rest. It wasn't because they skimped on the size of heatsink or it's cooling capacity necessarily, it was just because of the hardware location and heat shielding used. It wasn't to the point it was causing returned systems really though there were a few out of thousands... it was just something people noted and some made it more of a complaint than just a comment. I agree that I didn't like the palm rest temp, but it didn't keep me from choosing it as my system of choice for gaming. I'm looking forward to gaming on the 8790 and hope they designed it to keep the palm rest temps cooler than the 4780, but it in no way would be a show stopper for me or most. I won't know for sure until we get our demo systems in and get to really run them hard... we'll gladly run every game known to man on them =), do the battery life tests video benchmarks, and other apps to bench them. I wouldn't want to guess the battery life considering so many things like GPU and CPU managements that can add a lot of battery life. If any part of it could be better IMO I'll let you know. I think Sager and Clevo are catching on quick as to exactly what everyone's dislikes and needs are in this extreme notebook community and doing a good job and molding the systems around these points.

Adam do you know when the systems will be in your hands to ship out?
Sager expects to begin shipping Northwood CPU systems within 1-2 weeks. The higher end Extreme Edition and Prescott CPU systems are waiting on Intel to get the processors out. If Intel doesn't get them out and Sager is ready to begin shipping otherwise we'll let everyone know to see if they want to modify their CPU choice or continue to wait. We probably won't have our demo models until they officially begin shipping.

Adam,

I have an HP but am going to return it and get the 8790, but...
I would rather have the high resoluition screen. Do you know how far out the higher resolution screen will be available?
Though there's a lot of guesses out there that can't be confirmed. I honestly don't know and haven't heard anything hard enough to report as information. Everything from there will be a 17" WSXGA+ LCD available in a month to there will be a 17" WUXGA LCD available late summer. Nobody seems to know and this includes Sager and the other vendors. Hitachi and all the LCD manufacturers aren't releasing any official info regarding the 17" notebook LCDs and their availability. They surely know of the demand so it must be coming. I would hate to lean on one rumor more than another because if I say it will be summer and people decide not to wait and it comes out next week I'll be burned at the stake... or if I say next week and everyone waits a month with still no release, I'll be burned at the stake as well =/

Though many other resellers and companies would love to see that happen, I wouldn't =). So, we're just left with waiting for some real factual info to post anything.

Their are NO heating problems on the 4780, everything is cool enough and runs fine with the exeption of the left side getting warm.
i found that 4780 left side (keyboad side) is hot as much as bottom side of laptop. Is it normal? And i dont even playing game yet, just Word, Excell stuff.

Because, i fell really unconfortable. I sent a message to sager, they ask me use thermometer and tell them tempeture.

That what i am gonna do.
Adam, can you do the same. Mesure the tempeture of your keyboad, the hottest spot.

Thanks

Wow good work of answering the Q's adam, thanks I was wondering about the left side palm heat also

I'd rather hear rumors from a credible source than nothing at all, so go ahead and post them.
I'm waiting for WUXGA myself.

I don't think you know what hot is? Melting point of plastic? Bet you don't use an airconditioner until the temp reaches 105 degrees. This is outside and not inside temps. I wonder how hot it is inside of the unit?? Seems "HOT" to me. And when did you start determining the qualifications for RMA - got another job or just an "alter ego"?
What is your problem? I WAS REFERING TO THE LAST POST IN WHICH HE STATED THAT HIS COMPUTER (POSSIBLY THE INSIDE OF THE CASE) WAS 104° WHICH ISNT HOT, IT IS NORMAL, THEN HE STATED THAT HE WAS GOING TO RMA BECOUSE OF THE CASE TEMP BEING 104°.
