I wanted to Post a few things about the Gateway notebook also maybe share information on game performance. I myself did some research before buying and couldnt find anything posted giving me any confidence in the integrated graphic arena so I wanted to share what I have.
Gateway MX6453 ran me $849 at Best Buy
It includes a Dual Core Turion64 at 1.6ghz with the 512Kb level 2 cache TL-52
160 gig harddrive PATA 4200 rpm I believe
2 gigs of DDR2 RAM
It says shared video and is one of the 200m its the xpress 1150
I left it on 256 for my tests but did notice I could bump it up to 512 for video using the included driver.
Screen on this isnt spectacular. Its Darker at the top then bottom, alot of notebook screens are this way. I should be getting a Dell m1210 soon heard they have screen issues but Im guessing no different then the gateway. Just an OK screen expect a little darker top then bottom no matter what angle you move it to.
First I have to mention this is a downgrade for me I had a SAGER notebook originally with a P4 3.6 and radeon x800 later replaced with parts to make it a geforce 7900. I had issues with games and wasnt looking to spend alot of money this time around.
In fact I notice some game stutter in WoW with the gateway the same as what I was getting in SAGER granted my settings are lower but I paid alot less this time around.
On to the games. Yes you can run some games with integrated graphics. Here are what Ive ran so far. If anyone wants me to test a game and I have it I will.
1.) World of Warcraft - Ran with settings on low at native resolution ran alot better when putting down to 1024x768. About 7fps in Ironforge jumps up to 40 on some areas soloing, About 12-18 in battlegrounds
2.) Grand Theft Auto 3:Vice City - Ran great everything on High Native Resolution. I got a stutter sometimes dealing with Radio Stations I had experienced that on my SAGER as well
3.) UT2004 - Ran with a couple options turned down like shadows most everything else on medium and native resolution. It was playble in a deathmatch with 24 bots.
4.) Darwinia - Everything on high hovers around 20fps fine for a game of this sort tho.
5.) Guild Wars - Runs I used Auto detect and it ran ok not sure on fps could set some options down but definitely playble.
6.) Half Life 2: Episode One - Yep it actually plays I put everything on Low and 800x600. Single Player game ran through a little bit seemed ok and logged on to deathmatch online and it works. Wont WoW you with graphics but will run.
7.) Star Wars Battlefront 2 - Runs. I was running all settings on low with native resolution. If you have a gateway like mine tho take note the sound didnt match up with what was going on onscreen. There was a delay. I have a PCMCIA sound plaster I used it and sound matched up fine. So playable you may want anothe rsound source if using gateway like mine. (On a side note this brings up one thing I dont like about my gateway the ports all on the right. When Im using my mouse having the usb and pcmcia card slot on the same side is a bother)
8.) Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 - Runs fine. I used a widescreen hack to run native 1280x800 resolution. I left the rest at the default. I tried manually changing all items to high and too medium still too much for it so I went with defaults and native resolution. Runs fine.
9.) Far Cry - Runs at Native Resolution with everything on Low. Doesnt look that great like most titles tested however its again playble like the rest.
10.) Call of Duty - Run at Native Resolution 1280x800 with everything about medium. Runs Well.
11.) Freedom Force - This thing ran great at Native Resolution with settings on high.
12.) Command and Conquer Generals - Could run on high settings I liked medium and native resolution.
13.) Roller Coaster Tycoon - Just fine of course native resolution
14.) Starcraft - Another fine one low resolution tho.
15.) Warcraft III - options up max and 1024x768 resolution
I will be posting more games as I get them loaded and try them out. Overall with all the games that actually ran even tho on low Im pleased. Even comming from a Sager Im becomming more attached to the more portable nicer battery life notebook with the ability to still run games.
As far as applications go I did run a DVD on it in battery mode. I noticed some hesitation and stutter on the menu screens so I shut off the power save on the video and stuttering went away. With that said and with monitor pretty dim I probably got an hour and 45 minutes out of it before the Notebook shut down. It was the Matrix Movie so it never finished. I may test it again later with power consumption turned on.
