Screw Intel/Dell wireless! ATHEROS ROCKS!

Well everyone, consider me a full convert. I got my Atheros AR5006EX card yesterday and installed it. Let me tell you WOW!!!! This is quite the powerful card. I picked up over 2x the AP's that I saw with the Intel card, and my signal strength almost doubled. After looking at the card specs more through software I found the following impressive numbers:

AR5006EX transmission power
73-100mW

which matches my Linksys "hacked" router that puts out 83mW. MUCH better than the Intel cards ~45-60mW. Not to mention that I am getting more battery life as well. About 10 min in fact. That is nice too.

SO.... how do I know what one I need? There are 2 distinct versions of this card that apply to us Dell users. They are as follows:

AR5006EX - MiniPCI-E Card for E1405, 1505, 1705 and M1210, 1710, 2010 series Dell notebooks. Will work with M90 as well. Other models with miniPCI-E can use this card too.

AR5006XS - MiniPCI Card for XPS, Gen2, M170, 9200, 9300, etc... Basically all the laptops that do not have the new miniPCI-E slot.

So now that I know what I need, how do I get one?

Well there are 2 dealers of this card currently as they are pretty rare (especially the PCI-E version). They are listed by them on ebay for $70+shipping as well, but by going direct through forum, I got mine for $68 shipped.

You can get the cards from garagesale125. He is active at notebookreview.com, and I have seen him around here too. He is from Hong Kong, but dont let that scare you as I received top-notch shipping and service from him. Fully recommended and is the only one I have EVER found that can get the PCI-E version.

Another member here that seems to have the 'hookup' is Firebretha. Dont know much about him, but He carries the XS version from what I have read lately.

But anyway, GET THIS CARD IF YOU USE WIRELESS HEAVILY!!!! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!!!

Cheers,
Whack

You are correct Faust, I changed my post to elaborate a bit.

The whole going to work at 3:30am thing numbs the mind.

Agreed. My AR5006EGS card I got off an eBay seller from Germany works great! I'll store the Intel card just in case I need to access an 802.11a network, which I've never done in 3+ years of wireless use.

Hello everyone,

Is the wireless cards easy to change out (is it about as easy as changing out a memory stick)? Also whackamac, how did you hack your router to get more juice out of it? Thanks!!

Essentially its the same as popping out a mem stick, all you do is pop open a little hatch for it, undo 2 wires easily, and take the wireless card out as if its a stick of ram

Also be sure to uninstall old driver package before changing cards, and installing new driver package after.

I have no beef with my Intel card. Not a single dropped connection and consistent 710-730kbps (5.5 mbit) download speeds from UUNET at a 20m distance from the router. My ethernet connection produces exactly the same speeds. What's the point? I'll get it when N becomes an approved standard. It also gives me well over 2.5 hours on a 9-cell battery when browsing the net at 40% screen brightness.

Did you notice a significant change in battery life with this card? I'm getting about 2.5 hours without wireless. I am about to change my batteries but I am thinking about changing my wireless card as well.

Haven't run a full timed battery test on my new card.

The Intel Software is HORRIBLE.

Is the Atheros any better?
How do you mean horrible? I'm running the Atheros 4.2.2.27 driver with the 4.2.0.384 Utility, and it's worked fine.

Intel's has about 5 programs run in the background ontop of what windows starts up for wireless. Intel's Wireless connection junk is slow and a memory hog.
OK. The Atheros is a lot more friendly then. The only program running for it is ACU.exe, the configuration utility.

I emailed him for one, handed out some rep to wacky and whackmac

also here is a link for latest DRIVER

Thanks Dazog. I tried the 33 drivers when I first got the card, but it wouldn't work. But the 27 drivers work great.
When I get my card i will look at them

may require a simple .inf mod to allow them to install since these drivers seem to be tailored to whatever OEM uses for there own branded card.

ftp://lizzi555.dyndns.org/Download/WLAN/Atheros/

has all the versions

add it to the first post

They installed OK, but my card wouldn't start. Had an exclamation mark in the Device Manager. Said "Screw it!" and just installed the .27 drivers.

Why would you use Intel's software if it sucks/junk? Windows does a good job at getting you connected.
