How HOT is Too HOT? (m5550)

Right now its running at 76 degrees (Using the Nvdia Drivers) and my wrists are getting hot and its quite irritating. Im scared thats it running TOO hot, my dual 7900GTX on my desktop are only running at around 30-50 (Water cooled) i know its cuz its water cooled but i dunno, 76 seems so high.

Also, What settings can i put it to have MAXIMUM battery? (I Enabled the Long Battery in the BIOS) and i run it on "Max Battery" at the lowest Brightness, VGA and MAX power savings and at 100% i get ~ 2:00 Hours. Is this normal?

76 Celsius or Fahrenheit? Between 30 and 45c while idle under proper conditons (fans aren't blocked and the laptop is in a cool ventilated area) is normal. Under stress I don't see anything wrong with 76c. It's the power of a desktop in a laptop, it's going to run hot. It'll be higher than a desktop by 10, maybe 20c, because there's less airflow and smaller fans. It's definitely going to run hotter than a water cooled system.

As for battery life, ya, 2 hour is about average. I assume you're gaming in those 2 hours and you're running a video card, you're going to get less batteyr life than, say, the Sentia or any non-gaming laptop. The vidoe card sucks voltage anytime the laptop is on and if you're gaming the HDD spins more which also uses more power.

all im doing is like typing on Microsoft Word, liek class notes and stuff, no gams, Wireless-Netowrk is on.

its 76c, and even on idle its pretty high. Never goes under 60.

Is there anyway to get more then 2 hours out of the battery? Ive seen these boses which act like a charger, you charge it up at night and when u run out of batter you connet your laptp to it and it charges it and gives it a longer life or something like that.

If it makes you feel any better, my m5550 runs VERY HOT as well. Even when I'm doing basic things like browsing the net. It's a hot lappy. Do you have a cooler for yours?
My GPU runs between 60 deg. C and 72 deg. C. (no cooler, sitting on a flat surface and running all day long at work)
The default threshold is 100 deg. C.
I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless you believe that it's causing problems.

My Go6800 runs around 55-66 dergrees under normal browsing/work conditions
unless you are getting artifacting or lockups you should be fine

I get artifacting around 78 but mine is an old card

I did notice some temp drops using the Tweaks r us Xtrreme G drivers so maybe you should give those a shot

I think theres something wrong, ive got my laptop on a cooler right now, on a flat surface and when i start my laptop up its at ~ 50c, i havnt done anything, its on AC power, im just chatting on MSN and surfing the web and its at 74c roght now (Its on a cooler!!)

It's common for the 7900 to run around that temp, it's just how it is. I've heard the same for the 7900GS. It may not be doing a whole heck of a lot, but it's constantly working on displaying whatever you have the screen, so it never really gets a "cool-down" period. Unless there's an intake fan near the video card's location a laptp cooler won't do anything to keep it lower.

Like the above posters mentioned, unless the card is displaying artifacts and crashing your display, nothing to worry about unless you think you're seeing less than optimal performance.

its a 7600 though :?
That's what I meant, but the same still applies. It's common for the 7600 to run that hot from what I've read and I hear the same things about the 7900. Basically video cards can run that high and be alright, problems occur when artifacts ebter the picture. Pun not intended

What Are Artifacts? :/
Im not sure but i think i get some when i play WoW but its not all the time, i restrat WoW and its fine.

I dont know if thats artifacts or not
Graphic artifacts are anomalies that show up when a graphics card is having issues. If you're seeing flashing pixels that contrast against the color you know the graphic is supposed to be, those are artifacts. Run a Google searc for ATITool, download it, and click the Search for Artifacts button. I realise your card isn't an ATI, but it's compatible with any card at least for artifacts. Look for any flashing yellow pixels and it'll tell you when it sees any.

i got the ati in mine it runs around 50c and peaks at 60c. it is a little warmer than i would want, but is completely manageable..

My 7900gs's in my m9700 run from 66-78 degrees depending on load.

mines ALWAYS run at 75-76 and usually aorund 80 when i play games. and 90c when i run that artifact search on ATITool =/

I dont know -.-

THanks for the information I was getting worried after reading complaints from people who had problems with their m5550's. So it's pretty normal to have a warm notebook. (not laptop, btw, it's not meant to be played on your lap!!) IT IS a desktop replacement remember??

Where did you get this tool?

thats the old temp monitor in the Nvidia driver. Now you can use ntune. the NVMonitor will show temps and more.
