Vaio vs HP

Thread Starter
Here is my situation.

I need a lap top. The lap tops I'm looking at are anywhere from $1,000-$1,400 giver or take....honestly thats A LOT of money to me, so I want to make sure I get the best deal, but I dont know a bunch about computers and such. I read a few threads on here and everyone seemed very nice and very helpfull, so I figured I'd see what you folks had to say.

This is what I want my computer for, I wanna download lots of music, so i figured I need a fairly large hardrive (100 or so gb or an external....or both, I like a lot of music.) and burn those to a cd, or transfer to an mp3 player.

I dont play a lot of games, two or three, but occasionally I find a new one I like so I'd like it to be able to hold up for mild gaming.

Also I'm going to be travling a lot so a good wireless.....whatever, is going to be needed, and probably am going to be watching a fair share of movies.

I'm looking at the HP dv9000t. I've heard really good things about Sony vaio's, but their website isn't NEAR as helpfull as the HP.

I'm sorry this took up so much room but if you'd give me ANY help at all I would really really really appreciate it. Thanks.

What size are you ultimately wanting? The HP is a 17", and the only thing comparable on a screen size basis would be the Sony AR, and i'm not sure if you can find one for <$1400. If you can, it would be the AR130G, which is a very nice system, but the difference would be the processor. The AR130G will have the Core Duo, while the HP you mention has the Core2duo. You also won't be able to get the integrated TV tuner on the AR130.

If you don't need the 17" screen, you should check out the FE series. It can be had with the same graphics card, and would be a little more travel friendly.

I do not recommend SONY as a decent laptop manufacturer, simply because of their appalling customer service and complete lack of support, manuals and spares once your (1 year) warranty has expired. I repair a hell of a lot of laptops for HP, TOSHIBA, IBM (Lenovo) etc, and in my 10 years of workshop experience I have to say when a sony vaio lands on my bench, it will probably simply get written off due to lack of spares.

HP on the other hand provide a wealth of support, including public access to maintenance and service guides, parts which will be available from most brokers/spares vendors. Laptops in general dont have a very long shelf life and are not as disposable as desktops, in the long term, your much much better of with HP, IBM, Toshiba, or even DELL. (in my opinion)

I know this thread is old, but I still have to jump in. I have had Sony Vaio for quite some time. When ever I've had a problem customer service has been great. Rare is it that I've had any trouble at all. Once with an out of warranty system, that required a recall repair that wasn't well known. But after a few calls I got what I needed at a very reasonable cost.

Just to tell you - I've just bought a new system, an AR and expect it's delivery in a few days. Sony customer service is pretty good. Not as good as Dell online service but really better than HP which seems to reroute their calls to countries that barely speak English.
