Go 7950 512mb GTX - Page 3

Thread Starter
After reading the forum pages, and looking at the specs of the 7950 GTX (I'm not an IT guy) my question would be, is the 7950 just an over clocked 7900? And is the 7950 a stop gap to the 8800 video card.

7950

The real problem is just like you said, "Is this just a stop-gap?"

Yea, you know, this should have been a dual core GPU, period.

The manufacturers need to stop with the confusing 7950 GT, 7950 GTX, 7950 GX2 all of it. There is only one reason they do that and it is because they want to cash in on the confusion. I guess I can see the GT vs. GTX, but when we start breaking it down to GS, GTO, GT, GTX... come on. Especialy when you can have a 7950 designation but the GS portion actually brings the performance below a 7900 (these are just made up for sake of arguement, I know that this perticular model doesn't have those designations yet)

I kind of got off the notebook topic here, and I appologize for that. If anyone wants to really dig into the 7950 in its own thread I actually sponsered the notebook forum at:

Is anyone running a 7900 gtx at the 7950's speed stably? And right now, whats the cost difference between these 2?

Soulreaper

I have a price difference of about $100 more. I think that is HIGH since this is already a very expensive card.

The best I could get my 7900GTX to OC to stable in my 5760 is 525/650.
According to GPUReview.com, the 7950 is stock clocked at 575/700.
Those are some nice stock clocks, however looking at the desktop variants really puts things into perspective. A BFG OC desktop 7900GTX runs 670/1640MHz for example. The 7950GTX still can't match that, not bad for a notebook when considering heat limitations though

uhh, dude, thats completely irrelevant.

OC Scores

I think the OC scores Tegen got are going to yield equivalent performance to the 7950 GTX stock. They should keep the price the same as the 7900 GTX right now, or actually come out with a new product.

nVidia upping clocks isn't exactly a huge R&D investment as a 8xxx series card would be. Don't get me wrong, if the price increase is $30 or $35, ok, but $100 or more is ridiculous (if that is what it turns out to be).

It is infact $100 more than if configured with a 7900
post #52 of 69
Well then, I think that's a rip off.
Where did you get that number, Sager? Because I don't use Sager so the price may be different.

I have modded the 7950 GTX cards in my notebooks because they run so hot. I would recommend looking into additional cooling for the card if you get it somewhere else.

nVidia has also droped the price on the 7950 and 7900 GTX variants already. The 7950, not a lot, but some.

Killer, in what way did you mod your 7950? Also, any specific ideas for additional cooling? I'm thinking of sticking one in my Clevo D900t, which currently has a 6800u (yea I know i'll have to get the latest motherboard first).

Check it out at the Guru of gaming Forum.

I am going to have a running 7950 GTX thread there mostly of cooling mods and tweaks.
Thanks for the link Killer! I checked it out and it looks great. I sent you a webmail at your site asking about purchasing.
With the cooling mods I am able to OC the 7950 GTX to 625/800 and get some awesome numbers. 10,440 on the 3D'05 Marks. I can't wait for the 20" dual 7950 GTX to come out this week and build that puppy up!
