Aspire 5100 USB Problems

Thread Starter
Whenever I plug in a USB device the computer makes 3-4 beeps and then attemps to find a driver for the device, but never does. Have tried lots of different devices (USB Optical Mouse, MS Wireless Mouse, USB Flash Drives, USB Hard Drives) and nothing found a driver. In the case of the MS Wireless Mouse, I installed the drivers and even pointed to them and they were not found. Any suggestions besides completly reinstalling the OS (WinXP MCE). Have sent email to Acer, no response yet.

Thank you
Bud

Thank you for the reply

All latest drivers installed
I have not looked into eLock or eManagement, but check to see what they might offer.

In another thread re someones USB problems, it was suggested that all USB controller items be deleted in device manager, reboot and let the system redetect them. It worked for them, but not for me, now all I have are yellow !!!!!. Looks like I may have to do a restore from the recovery disks this weekend.

The problem I belive is either a corrupt USB Host Controller Driver or a bad USB Host Controller

i would suggest that u check the view "hidden device" in hardware device manager and see what else is marked with yellow

sometimes just because of another "not.correct" installed driver can cause a ripple effect
can u post a pic of ur expanded device manager?

cheers ...

my 5102 suffered/is suffering from the same problems - and even said it was not 2.0 anymore even tho the controllers seem to detect and look fine in the device manager. alt-f10 d2d factory reset did not help. first the orbicam stopped working and was detected as unknown then other usb devices, would just forget what they are and unknown device. if you move to another port, it will detect and it buys you a few more hours until BOOM! unknown device again. i have tried many solutions, from a-z... i have determined at this point it is most likely, in order of likelyhood based on process of elimination and basic logic... the only thing i know for sure is that - fresh from the factory reinstatement from d2d alt-f10 does not help - this means its certainly not software settings. i also updated the bios to 2.6 before reinstalling to see if that helps. did not. ok order of most likely descending: 1) USB controller is dying/dead or is suffering from under/over voltage or some kind of timing error initializing when the pc boots too quick - one of these is most likely 2) the HD data is corrupted (this might mean the HD ITSELF is corrupted, or that simply the hidden recovery partition is corrupted - cause an alt-f10 reinstatement doesnt do anything for the cam/grey area/unknown device problem from the first second) 3) the memory is defective and is corrupting the registry or HD (least likely - because no apps crash, and performance is great aside from the usb problem) 4) the cam is just defective and its messing up the USB ports somehow hope that helps. you should send your notebook into acer right away - i am sending mine, but acer hasnt send the courier to pick it up yet or confirmed the pick up. ill keep u posted.

Called Acer Support this AM re my USB problem. After a 45 minute hold, I got a very pleasent and helpful rep on the phone. Explained the problem and added that another user with the same problem suggested that the "USB controller is dying/dead or is suffering from under/over voltage...". She issued a repair ticket and recommended I send the unit in for repair. I got the impression that she has heard of this problem before but could not her to admit it to me. Anyways I'm going to send the unit in and see what happens. Will keep everybody posted on whats happenning

please do. ive installed vista and the orbicam is still being detected 0000 and switching to unknown device (even tho i know there is no driver for it under vista, i KNOW its supposed to be a yellow ! and the proper name of the device and its not supposed to wink out and in like that)

i wonder if my other devices will work. so far my usb hd (which always worked) is ok... i cant test bluetooth so we'll see. keep us posted! also, i would love to know how your pc looks and whats different besides USB when u get it back. thanks!

im curious to know.. did your system start bugging out the usb port on the left, next to the heat exhaust. first?

It's been a long time since I started having the problem, The left USB port being the most convientient to use so I would guess yes, however, once it failed I tried the other ports with the same result

I have never used the Orbicam except to see if it worked. I think I have less than 30 seconds total usage time. I have seen other messages relating USB problems & orbicam together

Bud

Received email Saturday from Acer Depot Repair, my laptop is coming home. They give me a tracking number, but not a carrier. Anyone know who Acer Repair Depot uses for returning repaired laptops. Tried the tracking number on both FedEx and UPS sites without success

I wonder if that isn't a bios issue? It almost certainly looks like it.
Do you guys know/recall which bios version you're using?
The acer-panam (North America) site has a v.2.0 with no readme as to fixes, updates, or anything.
Mine had stock 1.9 so I flashed it with the 2.0.....then a few days ago, found a v.2.6 and 2.72 on the acer-euro driver site. They both had the standard readme's as follows:

[Fixed History]

v2.60-
01. Disable USB Power on S4/S5 by EC bios.

v2.50-
01. Fix DDR2-667 512MBx1 DOS Reboot Failure
02. Fix s3/s4/cold boot/warm boot long run test black screen issue.
03. Add UVC CCD Bison/Suyin support in int15 for vista.
04. Disable hot-buttons when lid-switch is closed (EC bios).
05. Modify SMBIOS for Vista DTM Failure
06. Modify Brightness Levels to 16.
07. Remove Auto Change FIR PNPID for Vista OS since Driver Cover FIR SMC1036 PNPID.
08. Reconfigure HD verb table after s3 resume for audio no sounds issue on vista.
09. Modify HD codec pin configuration CD IN(1C) & PCBeep(1D).
10. Speed Up S3 Resume Time for Vista OS
11. Disable Un-Used PCI Clock Sources of South Bridge for EMI.

[Fixed history]

v2.72-
01. Fix BSOD 0xD1
02. Fix the boot sequence default incorrect(CD-ROM swap HDD) after flash bios on SATA flatform.
03. Add OS detection code for BSOD OxEA solution.
04. Add detection for new uvc ccd of bison/suyin.

v2.71-
01. Remove hot key function(Fn+F5, Fn+right, Fn+left) for design around samsung hot key patent.
02. Fix Bluetooth & WirelessLan control in INT15 function abnormal
03. Do not send SCI any more when pressing hot-key to switch display or adjust brightness. (EC bios)

I emailed acer support asking why these were available on the euro site, but not the acer-panam. I haven't rushed to flash with either one, mainly because I'm not having any of the issues listed as fixed.

The issue I'm wondering about is whether I've got the optimum video driver pack installed. Cybermind, I saw you had posted to several threads on that- could you put up some links again? I've got the standard Chipset/ATI drivers installed, and I saw a post that mentioned tweaking some .inf files, in maybe an Omega release?

That certainly is possible. Come to think of it, im not sure if my cam stopped working after I flashed the BIOS with 2.60.... You might be on to something or maybe not.

I'm using 2.60 - and the notebook originally came with 2.50.....

Me too, and some vista video drivers! OK here's another reason why I didnt flash to 2.72... v2.72- 01. Fix BSOD 0xD1 02. The Catalyst 7.1 drivers with .inf mod work fine with the xpress1100... If u'll be patient I'm working on a driver/bios/tweak blog/site for the 5102 and should be finished this coming weekend - ull be able to get everything you need there.

Some people use the omegas. i prefer to use original ati drivers, and mod the inf only. who knows what omega does in the "mix" of stuff... but hey whatever works!
