I did flash the bios to 2.60 after I was having USB problems, so I don't think the problem was the flash. My laptop is coming home now, wonder if the repair depot would do a bios flash

That would be awesome.
A sticky pointing to your blog/site would be a natural also.I've never had problems with Omegas. I'm pretty sure the ATI people endorse him unofficially, of course. But the latest ATI official drivers would be the preferred, in this case, I think, since he hasn't even had a chance to tweak those yet.

i've just downloaded the officially released 7.1 catalyst for vista 32-bit today... and although they say they support the xpress 1100, once again we have no reference to 482M or the 1100 so it detects no compatible controller!
anyhow ive modded them to install and am testing now... ill update soon

Ah, well, I'm in no rush to Vista, so I guess that solves that. I'll read up on it anyhow, thanks.

seriously tho? vista runs WAY better than MCE on the 5102...and it really *IS* enough of an OS upgrade to warrant a little jog, if not a run, to upgrade. this ati problem should be resolved soon... after my hangover LOL

I'm running XP, and after 4 years, MS has just about stabilized that version. I wouldn't have MCE, as it seems like a sneaky return to ME in some ways, which was the sorriest OS they ever made.
Comparisons by tomshardware say Vista runs slower than XP.

Of course, MS will say that is bound to change "soon". Fine. I'm not particularly excited about once again being force-fed Microsoft's vision of the future of computing.

I realize that a new OS like vista, with new features and a whole new rendering system will be slower on older/current hardware than one that has had a few years to "breathe" and "mature".
However, vista is robust and runs well on certified hardware... well enough that i percieve a marked speed-up and improvement in many areas aside from how many FPS we can get in games etc - and well, perception is reality. toms hardware is a fine site, accusations of being intel sell-outs aside, but they often fail to see the bigger picture. anyhow, im not really a vista fan, but i do know a better OS when i use one over time, and im definately pleased with vista (and its quirks) as a definate UPGRADE to XP.

btw, MCE2005 is a mature version of XP Pro, with an extra proggie to make using XP on a big-ass TV to view your media easier to use with a remote.... its definately the TOP DOG of XP versions, and runs best.
If you're sticking with XP for a while, you really should consider using MCE2005 so at least u can have the most stable version of XP... no? You dont have to ever launch media center hehe.

anyhow give it some consideration if you think its worth the research. in the end ud end up with a better OS maybe without having to move to vista.

Bud, can you and Cybermind clarify something just for common knowledge? Your laptops are exhibiting USB issues serious enough that you, Bud sent yours back to Acer for repair, yes?
What I'm really curious about is if there was an original USB issue when/if you (and Cybermind) were running the orignal installed XP MCE, or if it popped up after installing Vista?

OH jeez no. My 5102 was humming along perfectly in MCE2005 without any issues. there was no messing around or strange devices or hubs or anything of any sort or even any boost-y type apps installed. i had just bought it nov 11th....!
first thing that died is the cam. one day (i had used it in the same boot cycle, just hours before) it stopped working... so i rebooted amd noticed it wasnt doing the LED initialize thing it did when it used to work, when i would boot the pc. it began saying then it didnt recognize unknown device, and putting 0000 for the pid and vid... then it would decide it knew what it was again, and redetect it. i never touched the drivers during all this. after it would redetect randomly, (while i was doing something unrelated).. i would check and it didnt work and showed a gray screen from my computer where the cam is, and no app would recognize it
also, if i DISABLED the device while i was either listed in device manager as UNKNOWN DEVICE.. or as ORBICAM, if would do it for a while, then decide to ENABLE IT BY ITSELF and detect it as whatever the latter was. this happened in mce whenever it wanted while i was working. couple of times a day
then suddenly one day WHILE i was working in word 2007 (not after a sleep or any crap like that) the usb ports just decided that the left side port would forget right while i was typing that there was a device in it.
then it decided there was, but NOW it forgot what it was, and decided it was pid and dev of 00000
so i reinserted it, and it kept seeing it as 0000. i then stuck it in the back right side port and of course it detected (nothing wrong with that device, im using it now) and worked fine. for a few hours. then it decided that THAT port didnt know any devices also. so i rebooted and tried both ports, same problem. like those ports forgot what it means to recognize 2.0 devices.
then i used the last port, and when that eventually decided also that it wouldnt work for 2.0 devices (tested with usb hdd and bluetooth module).. at that point i decided to do an ALT-F10 (keep in mind, NOTHING was changed on the notebook in terms of anything, drivers, bios, partitions etc - all original factory settings)
so i did that and everything but the ORBICAM worked. all ports worked! the orbicam was still doing its shifty little unknown and then detect, unknown and then detect over time randomly - and also never working in either state or paying attention to me DISABLING it in device manager.
then the ports started dying again as before, one by one, over the course of days. i tried all the standard troubleshooters and searched the net. found possibilities, and tried them. othing worked.
so i decided to flash bios with newer one 2.60 from 2.59... that didnt help
so i decided to try vista, and see if a new OS might prove it was a software issue
vista worked fine (no cam, but then again there werent any drivers then, now there are but the cam doesnt work now so it IS defected or unplugged or what have you)
then after a few days, it started again. the left port died, the right port died, only 1.1 worked.. and now i am on my last usb port its been 2 weeks and this one is still working. also my right port on the back works with some devices some of the time, but not others.
so we can rule out completely, driver issue. afaics, its either BIOS related or the cam is causing the problem from a faulty wire or connection or failure, or the usb on the motherboard is dying (unlikely).
im afraid to send it in cause so much else about this notebok is perfect and its in pristine condition and sending it in could bring it back with a shit screen, or scratches, or something else. so i want to, if possible, without voiding my warranty, fix it. im considering a bios flash to 2.72, but it may void my warranty so im holding on that.
we'll see what happens.

That really looks like a bios issue to me too, especially considering there are already several USB bios fixes in the later versions. I'd definitely email them what you've posted here, if you're not planning on sending it in.

Well, I went ahead and flashed version 2.72 successfully....but I've not been plagued with the USB issues. Or much of any hardware issues. So far, this puppy is running cool as a cucumber. I can't say how impressed I am with that, considering it has a dual-core Turion.
I don't know how that could possibly void a warranty anyway, since it's their ftp site. Issues I was having were the ATI Control Center. It or the CLI, to be more accurate, would spawn several new threads of itself, then issue a notice that it had to be closed- then there'd be a single instance.
I uninstalled and put in the lastest Omega driver pack, since if I'm not going Vista any time soon, seems to be the answer for me.

I had USB problems right out the box. Would not recognize any USB devices. When I inserted a USB device, it would beep quickly 3-4 times and launch the new hardware found wizard trying to install the required driver for the hardware. Never found one. I did a complete system restore with the recovery disk I made.Everything worked as expected for 4-5 weeks, then it all started again. Repeat the above process 2 or 3 more times and decided that it was time to see if Acer could cure the problem. My laptop is on it's way home, according to FedEx I will get it Saturday by 1PM.

Thats GREAT NEWS! OMG. that was the issue with the control center that i was having, and have been trying to fix! thanks for that confirmation... the cli runs one systray icon, then another, then the other closes, then there are 3, etc etc ad infinitum. i wonder if this is a common problem or just with our chipset or what have you.
cant wait to see if others are having this problem but i dont think too many people actually have decent drivers running on their 5102's yet. but thats MY FAULT since i dont have the 5102/site/blog/thingie running yet LOL HAHA
