ive got all 10 fingers, all 10 toes crossed for you!!!!

Got home late last night and my laptop was returned. It was pretty late but did open the box and found it in the same condition as it was sent.

However, the repair consisted of reinstalling the OS. Description of work done = Software installed - Tests OK. That's it. As you may guess I am pis...... As I told them I have done that several times and it will work for 3/4 weeks and stop working. I won't get to do anything else with the system until the weekend. One project will be to let Acer know how I feel about their Tech Support

i dont think he'll really know until a week or so passes and it starts crapping out again.... but this is definately a cause to remember

i think i will always put a big marker written sheet saying my main points taped to the lid of the pc

"do not simply re-install, it will not solve the problem"
"this is NOT a software related problem"
"probable solution: change motherboard"

I put the laptop in the plastic bag it came in. I included a page & one-half letter detailing the problems and the prior reinstalls. I even told them that a reinstall would fix it for a few weeks. Did they read it, who knows, most likey whoever opens the packages trashes everything but the computer.

I think the next time, the letter goes inside the computer so when then open the lid it is there, maybe than the tech will see it. Maybe multiple copies needed inside the box, inside the wrapping & inside the computer.

I just pulled the HD and replaced it with a new one and about to install 32 bit Vista business. Decided that I'll do 32 bit in the Acer (have 10 Vista Business licenses) and only 1 64 bit ultimate license which I'll use on one of my desktops. Will return later for an update.

wise! i think installing vista on the acer will impress u how well it actually runs. also, the usb issues are not as prevalent with vista in my experience (although we may not have the exact same usb issue)

ur patience and demeanor is respectable! keep us updated

This message is brought to via my Aspire 5102 running Vista Business (32 bit). I used a Business upgrade dvd and used the clean install method that is plastered all over the Web. It works real well.

The install went great, the only unidentified hardware was the PCI flash memory, which was solved by using the ENE XP driver as suggested by Cyberbill. After installation Windows update did its thing and installed about a dozen patches including video and cardbus drivers. Everything working except the camera. The windows update did install a driver for the camera but no software that I noticed. I will admit I did not look hard for it.

So far, no USB problems. In the past it would 3-5 weeks for the USB to start acting up. So we will just wait it out for now.

I am very happy so far with the Acer 5102 & Vista combo.

UPDATE - 10 days into the install of Vista Business, USB working without problems so far. In the past it started failing at the 3-5 week point. Look for another update in a couple of weeks.

1 Month followup: I am now at the one month stage. The Acer and Vista are still happy with each other and best of all, no USB problems yet Bud

Hello...
I'm having the same problem with the webcam now...
I have a Aspire 5680 (5683WLMi) bought in Germany last november. It came with Win XP Home pre installed and at first everything worked fine, only after a few weeks I started noticing those beeps Windows plays when USB devices are dis/connected but I didn't know what it was and never gave it much attention either. In January I came back home (I live in Brazil) and installed Windows Vista (64 bit) and then the beeps started happening more often and I figured out it was the webcam as the software stated that it was being used by another program and I also saw that the Orbicam was gone and a unknown device (with the pid = 0000 and vid = 0000) showed up in the Device Mananger. This continued to happen every once in a while. Then I tried to reinstall the drivers/software but it continued to happen (even installed the other two Orbicam drivers - mine is Logitech). Then I started messing with the camera, flipping it back and forward to see if this was some problem with the phisical conection and it seemed to be the case (sometimes I would move the camera 180° and it would disapper from Device Manager and then come back at will). Anyway... just yesterday I installed another "instance" of the Windows Vista (this time the 32 bit version) and when I tried to use the webcam it did not work at all (the unknown device was showing all the time now)... it never worked again... In a attempt to see it work again, I managed to bring back the old (original) Windows XP Home (as with this instalation it worked 99% of the time) but now I can not make it work at all. Did some research on the web and found this thread which is the longest I've found so far. Now I see that I probably have a hardware (cabling problem as I would've thought) and it will have to be sent in for repare which is never going to happen because if I do it, the machine IS NOT going to return in the same state, not to mention how "carefully" the post office and the tech people handle those things (here if you are better off buying a new one - which you don't wanna do if you can't afford to pay 3 times more than what it really costs - than having it sent for repare)...
Well... at least the only problem I'm having is the webcam/unknown device thing. I haven't had any problem with the USB ports as happend with some of you (I must be lucky )... not up until now anyway.
This is a very cool notebook and it's a shame this is happening but seems to be a problem with Acer machines and not only in the US as I've seen reports in some european sites/forums as well.
So... if anyone has any sugestion other than having it sent in... appreciate it.
That' it...
Good luck to us all... )

I could reinstall the recovery disks and it would work perfect for 4-6 weeks and then revert back to not reconizing the USB device. I sent my machine to Acer for repair. Their repair dispite the fact I gave them detailed instructions on how to duplicate the problem resulted in them doing a reinstall of the OS (XP Media Center). As soon as I got the system back I changed the hard drive and installed Vista Business 32 bit on it. The computer has worked perfect since then. I found the Vista Orbicam drivers and software on the Chinese Acer site. Every thing works and I'm happy. If you send it in to acer, I'll bet all they do is reinstall the original OS. Good luck Bud
Right... I also bet the first thing they'll do is reinstall everything. I'm just not sure whether it would work since I installed one Win Vista and another Win XP Pro just to test it and nothing... The only thing I haven't tried yet is a reinstall from scratch... formating and everything, which I'll do tomorrow. I just finished backing everything up to my desktop and I'll try that. By the way... I just tried identifying it with a linux live cd (typing lsusb lists all usb devices and hubs connected) and it is not listed... so it really must be a hardware problem which I find strange because in Windows IT IS listed only not recognized (the strange thing is vid = 0000 and pid = 0000)... The worst of it all is that now a balloon keeps poping up saying an unknown USB device is connected blah blah blah. Sometimes it's like connect and disconnect and connect again but at each second... it is really annoying ... and then it stops doing that... I'll do the reinstall tomorow and post the results here... Thanks for the reply. P.S: "Repair... NOT Repare..." - Should have checked that before writing... Sorry

im pretty sure that the webcam in the 5102 is using a very thin cable or a very small connector to plug into the usb via a pretty standard approach. it follows that they may come loose by default and that the camera being semi-plugged in, internally, half the time, can cause problems with the USB stack over time. im 99% sure of this, and am considering opening the notebook to evaluate this theory. however, voiding the warranty for more serious problems should they arise has got me a little achy. i dunno what to do in THAT respect, but i will make a decision soon. all i know is, unless the notebook is not working at all, im not sending it in cause i dont want a worse thing back than i sent. keep u updated. alex

Yeah... I'm pretty sure of that too. It is definitely not a good connection. Just now it appeared correctly in the device manager but with the yellow exclamation, I reinstalled the driver and it became unknown again. Today I also thought of opening it myself but I too also a little afraid to do it (I have very little experience with opening notebooks). If you decide to do it or find a way to correct the problem, please post... I'm doing the full reinstall now...
