'Disk Error - Press any key to restart'

Hey,
I am posting for assistance about my laptop. Everything was working
fine until the system crashed when starting up AVG Free Edition virus
software. I shut it down and upon restarting it started a 'CHKDSK' and
scanned the entire hard drive for 'bad clusters' and replaced. This
process took about 6 hours. When it was finally completed it restarted
and everything seemed to be working normal.
It stayed on the Windows XP Pro boot-up screen for an unusually long
time and just when it was about to load my desktop, I got blue screened
and shut down before I could read what it said. I turned it on again
and the exact same thing happened. When I booted it up for the 3rd time
it immediately says 'Disk Error - Press any key to restart'. Now it
does this everytime I try to boot it up.

Anybody know how I can fix this? The laptop model is a Portege 3440 and
it has no floppy disc or CD-ROM disc so that makes things more
difficult.

Thanks for reading!

Patrick

How did you install XP? You must have access to a USB floppy or the CD drive that connects to the port replicator. If you can get a USB floppy, download the Hitachi drive fitness test, which will tell you whether or not your HDD is screwed up. Check that out and post back, but it sounds like you will likely need to replace the drive.

I bought the laptop from ebay last year and it came with XP installed. How the original owner did it, I do not know.

Thanks for the help guys. The laptop started to screw up 2 months ago and I knew it would end up like this. I think it's time to get a new laptop.
Again, thanks for the help guys.
