Dothan or desktop P4?

Once again, my company is changing the specs on the notebook they want me to have. Now, they want me to investigate the pros/cons of the upcoming Dothan processor vs. current P4 3.2 GHz notebooks. I'm not complaining, of course, 'cuz I ain't having to pay for my new notebook. I'm no hardware expert, so I'm throwing it out to my forum buddies...even those who don't like me. How will Dothan chips fare against the P4 in terms of power (i.e., 2 MB cache vs. Hyperthreading), speed, and other important stuff?

Tanx!!

I haven't seen any real benchmarks so I don't see how there can be a real comparison yet .. Anything right now is just guessing until the chips are released and we get some feedback ..

Chandrasekher (Intel's VP) keeps saying: "Dothan will be able to provide about a 15% performance boost at an equal clock speed with the previous-generation Banias version of Pentium M". Greater improvements aren't expected until Q3 (for the Alviso chipsets and 533MHz FSB); see, e.g.,

Frankly, I'm a bit disappointed, since I must buy my next notebook before the end of Q2.

its like comparing the pentium4 to the pentium4 EE see what adding 2mb of cache does to performance?

jswriter... good for you. My company only buys IBM so if they will buy a new one for me, it will be most probably a T40 series.

Anyway, I posted an old article re: Dothan:

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Good luck.

In a notebook...Dothan for sure. Maybe even in a desktop if all that cache really does make THE difference as the extra caches makes in the Pent M chips.
